Evans and Lamkin Garner All-Independent Honors

EDINBURG, TEX. --- Corey Lamkin (San Antonio, Tex.) and Brian Evans (Dallas, Tex.) represented Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the first team, as the men's basketball all-Independent squads were announced, Thursday.

Lamkin, who also doubled as the Independent Defensive Player of the Year, finished the season posting 11.9 points, a team best 8.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. The sophomore also ranked second on the team with 18 blocked shots. Lamkin posted four double doubles on the campaign, including a 12-point, 14-rebound effort at NIT participant Alabama Birmingham.

Evans, a second time first team all-Independent recipient, led the Islanders with a school record 135 assists and was second on the team with a 13.9 scoring average. He had 22 games of 10 or more points, five of which were 20-point plus scoring outings. Evans became the second player in the program's history to notch a double double in points and assists in an 18-point, 10-assist evening at NCAA Tournament qualifier Sam Houston State.

Joining Evans and Lamkin on the first team were Kevin Mitchell (UT-Pan American), Andrew Wisniewski (Centenary) and Josiah James (Birmingham Southern). Wisniewski was selected the Player of the Year.
Travis Bailey (San Antonio, Tex.) received second team accolades after registering 15 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.8 steals per contest. The junior netted 10 or more points in 23 of 29 games, which included seven games of 20 or more points. Bailey was first on the team in steals and second in assists.

"I felt all three of these players were very deserving of their honors," said Islander head coach Ronnie Arrow. "The good thing is they will all be coming back next year.
"Corey had a good all around year," continued Arrow. "With him being named the defensive player of the year, it showed people took notice of his play outside of his scoring ability. It was great to see Brian repeat as a first team selection and I'll be looking forward to having his senior season be even better. Travis also made big strides in his game this year in his play and I believe he will build upon this year's accomplishments as well."

Michael Gale (Centenary), Ryan Roller (Lipscomb), Corey Watkins (Birmingham Southern) and Ric Wyand (IPFW) rounded out the second team.

David Simon (IPFW) was the recipient of the Newcomer of the Year; James Poindexter (Lipscomb) was tabbed the Freshman of the Year, while Duane Reboul (Birmingham Southern) was named the Coach of the Year.
