CORPUS CHRISTI, TEX. --- Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi's Humberto Aguilar (Odessa, Tex.) and Jaime Landin
(Brownsville, Tex.) became the first-ever baseball players in
school history to officially be nationally ranked in baseball
statistical categories, as the NCAA unleashed its first report,
Tuesday.
Aguilar is tied for second in homers per game (0.50) and fifth in
runs batted in per game (1.58), while Landin is second in triples
per game (0.2).
Aguilar, who hammered two more homers in Monday's doubleheader
sweep of Texas Southern, is actually third in overall homers (19).
The senior will be looking to break the school record for 'round
trippers' in a season this weekend in a three-game series against
Prairie View. Billy Becher of New Mexico State leads the nation in
homers (22) and in homers per game (0.56).
Heading into the weekend, Aguilar has produced 60 RBI in 38
appearances, which ranks fourth in actual RBI. Once again, Becher
leads the country with 85 RBI in 39 games (2.18).
With his two-triple game against Texas Southern in a 15-3 blasting
of TSU, Landin broke his own school mark for triples in a season
(8). The sophomore, who is hitting .404 on the year, has the second
most triples of anyone in the country. College of Charleston's Lee
Curtis has nine on the year. Since the NCAA only recognizes triples
per game, Josh Pineiro of St. Peters leads at 0.26 triples per
game.
The Islanders also rank 22nd in the country in runs per game. In
its 40 games thus far, A&M-CC has accumulated 319 runs or a
shade under eight runs per contest. Southern is tops with 10.5 runs
per outing.
