NACOGDOCHES, TEX. --- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi?s Jesse Bibbs
(San Antonio, Tex.) became the school?s first-ever NCAA Regional
track & field qualifier at the Stephen F. Austin Invitational,
Saturday.
The senior captured first place honors in the high jump with a
jump of 6-9 1/2 and will represent the Islanders at the NCAA
Regional Championships at the end of May in Austin. Bibbs? jump
also shattered his own school mark, formerly 6-4 set last
season.
Jason Sepeda (Sweetwater, Tex.) narrowly missed joining Bibbs as a
qualifier. The junior finished second in the 800 meters with a new
school mark of 1:52.22, besting his own record by two seconds set
earlier this season. Sepeda needs to shave 0.50 seconds to
qualify.
Three other school records were broken as well. Alamar Cavada
(Corpus Christi, Tex.) took nearly nine seconds off her school
record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The junior ran an 11:25.98,
besting her previous time of 11:34.76 set last week at the Texas
Relays.
Keith Gordon (San Antonio, Tex.) rebroke his school record in the
triple jump with a second place finish. The freshman jumped a best
48-1, edging his former standard of 47-10.75 set at the Javelina
Relays in Kingsville in March.
Finally, the Islander men?s 400-meter relay ran a 41.70, a mark
just under the previous school record of 41.88.
