SAN ANTONIO, TEX. --- Mike Srp went the
distance on a four-hitter as UT-San Antonio blanked Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi 5-0 in the first game of a doubleheader,
Saturday. The Roadrunners completed the sweep with a 9-8 victory in
the nightcap.
UTSA took the lead with a two-run second inning. Aaron Semper
plated the first run on a bases loaded walk. Danny Phillips
followed with a run-scoring single. The Roadrunners tacked on two
more in the fourth, an inning highlighted by a solo homer by Jeremy
Blilie. UTSA finished off the scoring with one more run in the
sixth.
Srp, a senior, yielded only one walk, while striking out four. He
improved to 2-2, while Islander starter Scott Walker (Chandler,
Ariz.) fell to 1-2. The junior surrendered eight hits and four
earned runs in four innings of
work.
Humberto Aguilar (Odessa, Tex.) posted two of the Islander hits in
the loss.
Matt Srp's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth capped off a
three-run ninth as the Roadrunners erased a two-run deficit in the
ninth to complete the sweep.
Heading into the bottom of the fifth, UTSA trailed 6-1. The
Roadrunners scored five unanswered runs, including a four-run sixth
to knot the game at 6-6.
Mike Schlekewy (Calgary, Alberta) scored James Garner (Corpus
Christi, Tex.) on a grounder to shortstop to give A&M-CC the
lead once again. Blair Bourque (Taunton, Mass.) knocked in the
inning's second run with a bases loaded hit by pitch.
Following a costly Islander error, Gentry knotted the game at 8-8
by slapping a two-run double to right field. The senior scored on
Srp's hit.
Schlekewy opened the scoring in the top of the first on a double
that scored Hector Garanzuay (Brownsville, Tex.).
The Islanders struck for two runs in the second on a two-run shot
by Bobby Mora (Corpus Christi, Tex.). It was the junior's first
homer of the year.
After spotting the Roadrunners with a run in the bottom of the
second, A&M-CC stretched its lead by plating three runs in the
fifth. Garanzuay knocked in George Cabasos (Pearsall, tex.) with a
single. Two batters later, Aguilar belted his third homer of the
year, a two run shot to center.
The Islanders tallied nine hits in the loss, two each by Garanzuay
and Mora. Schlekewy, Mora and Aguilar each drove in two runs in the
loss.
Mike Garcia suffered the loss and fell to 1-1 on the year.
A&M-CC returns to action, Monday as it opens up a three-game
set with Morris Brown. The single game is set for a 2 p.m. start at
Islander Field.
