CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS ? Anna Hartzell (Sr., Georgetown, Texas)
poured in a season-high 17 points to lead the Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi women?s basketball team (8-4) to a 78-49 win over visiting
Texas State-San Marcos (0-8) today at Memorial Coliseum. The
Bobcats are the defending Southland Conference champions, and
participated in NCAA Division I regionals last season. With the
win, the Islanders have won their first six home games, for the
best home start in team history.
The Islanders overcame a strong start by Texas State, falling
behind 7-3 just 2:36 into the contest before using a 10-2 run to
take a 13-9 lead with 14:07 remaining in the half. Nicole Duncan
(Fr., Houston, Texas) started the rally with a three-pointer, and
Terra Andrews (So., Missouri City, Texas) followed a Tori Talbert
lay-up with a pair of her own lay-ups to give the Islanders the
lead for good at 10-9.
The Bobcats trimmed their deficit to two points twice, but TAMU-CC
used an 8-2 surge to seize a 26-18 lead, and took a 35-23 edge into
the locker room.
Andrews hit a lay-up to open the second half, sparking a 12-2 run
for the Islanders, increasing the lead to 47-27 with 16:13
remaining as TAMU-CC pulled away for the win.
The Islanders limited Texas State to 32.7 percent shooting from the
field, and 28.6 percent on the second half, while converting on
40.6 percent on their own shots from the field. Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi held a 45-36 edge on the boards with a
decisive 15-7 advantage on the offensive glass, scoring 18 second
chance points.
Andrews reached double figures for the eighth consecutive game,
hitting for 14 points while dishing out six assists, grabbing seven
rebounds, and three steals. Kirbria Lewis (Fr., Baytown, Texas) had
a career-high nine assists and scored 10 points. Lindsey Van Dorn
(So., Woodward, Okla.) chipped in 10 points, while Jackie Ododa
(Jr., Mombassa, Kenya) had 14 rebounds. Tori Talbert had 14 points
and 11 rebounds for the Bobcats.
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women?s basketball team will
return to action on December 23, when they hit the road to face
Tulsa. Tip-off will be at 3:00 p.m.
