CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS ? Jackie Ododa (Jr. Mombassa, Kenya)
grabbed 17 rebounds and scored 10 points to lead the Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi women?s basketball team (1-0) to a 57-48
victory over defending Southland Conference champion Texas-San
Antonio (0-2) at Memorial Coliseum.
After jumping out to an 11-4 lead with 16:14 remaining in the
opening half, the Islanders went into an offensive slump, allowing
the Roadrunners to go on a 13-2 run to take a 17-13 lead with 7:57
left in the half. TAMU-CC responded with a 7-2 run of their own to
close the half that culminated when Ododa?s rebound and put-back
dropped at the buzzer to give the Islanders a 20-19 lead at
intermission.
In the opening 8:36 of the second half, Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi charged to a 33-24 lead, but the Roadrunners chipped away,
pulling to within four on Katie Sandefur?s free throw, 33-29, with
9:04 remaining.
The Islanders held a decisive 44-29 advantage on the boards,
including an 18-5 edge on the offensive glass.
Lindsey Van Dorn (So. Woodward, Okla.) hit five of her seven
attempts, all in the second half, for 13 points, with three assists
and two steals. Kirbria Lewis (Fr., Baytown, Texas) had seven
points and dished out eight assists. Terra Andrews added nine
points. Dewella Holliday had a game-high 14 points for UTSA.
The Islanders will return to action on Sunday, when they travel to
Oregon for a Sunday match-up with Oregon State, and a Monday
contest at Portland.
