CORPUS CHRISTI, TEX. --- Carrie Sartain hammered down a
match-high 19 kills as Sam Houston State posted a come from
behind
25-30, 30-19, 31-29, 30-26 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi,
Tuesday night.
Liz Dahlstrom collected 11kills and a match-high 15 digs,
while Teri Palmer added 10 kills as the BearKats improved to
14-14.
With the victory, SHSU posted a two-match sweep over
A&M-CC.
Lauren Smith (Richmond, Tex.) led the Islander attack with 12
kills, while Sarah Hill (Plano, Tex.) and Laney Bardin
(Rockport,
Tex.) added 11 and 10 kills respectively in the loss. The
Islanders
fell to 12-17.
After the Islanders won the opening game, SHSU rebounded.
The BearKats upped their hitting percentage from a horrid .070 in
the
opening frame to a .286 in the second stanza.
In game three, Sam Houston State sprinted off to a 23-16
advantage. The Islanders then rallied back and reeled off a 9-2
run
behind the play of Laura Mann (Corvallis, Ore.) The sophomore
recorded 4 kills and 7 digs in the third game and eventually tied
the
game at 29-29 with her 31st ace of the year.
For the second consecutive game, SHSU took an early commanding lead
only to watch A&M-CC battle back once again. The BearKats led
23-17 until the Islanders went on a 9-3 run to knot the game at
26-26. SHSU posted the game's final four points, including the
final two coming on service aces by Karlee Butler, who posted 6
kills, 48 assists and 14 digs.
Islander setter Erin McClanahan (St. Louis, Mo.) eclipsed the
1,000-assist plateau by dishing off 46 assists and collecting a
team
high 14 digs in the process. Kaley Rombs (Ingleside, Tex.) and
Alexis Berger (Yoakum, Tex.) chipped in 12 and 11 digs in the
defeat.
The Islanders return to action, Friday evening at UT-Pan
American.
