CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi cross country team is set to open its 2014 campaign on Friday, as they will compete in the Rio Grande Valley Relays at the Monte Cristo Golf Course in Edinburg, Texas.
The meet is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. with the men and women each taking part in a 5k race.
The Islanders will look to repeat their recent success in this meet, as last year the men and women each secured the top four finishes.
"This is a good chance to get a good workout with a little competitive feel for some of the team. On the women's side we are running four of our veterans and one freshman and for the men we are running two sophomores and three freshman," said head coach Shawn Flanagan. "They will get some good experience and this allows some runners who have not been in Texas for the summer more time to train and get acclimated to the weather a little more."
Both teams enter this weekend ranked in the USTFCCCA South Central Regional rankings. The men come into the season ranked in the 10th slot while the women head to the relays ranked 14th in the region.
