Women’s Cross Country Team Moves Up Six Spots in Latest Regional Poll

CORPUS CHRISTI – After an impressive first-place finish over the weekend at the Islander Splash, the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's cross country team moved up six spots in the NCAA South Central Regional poll today, the largest jump by any team in any region in the nation. The men's team maintained its spot in eighth place after a successful first-place finish at the Islander Splash over the weekend.

"The women's team had a tremendous race at the splash and the results of the poll reflect the effort they put forth Friday night," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We are moving in the right direction toward our long term goal which is to be a force to be reckon with on the national stage. We are moving in the right direction we just have to keep going."

The women's team improved its 12th place ranking after securing the title at the Islander Splash. The team collected a score of 44 and was led by Cecilia Jones, who clocked a second-place finish with a time of 18:21.2. The team holds the top spot in the Southland with Sam Houston State (No. 8) and Lamar (No. 9) sitting behind the Islanders in the poll.

The men's team stayed strong, holding the eighth spot in the South Central Regional poll and currently sits in fourth place in a very competitive Southland league. The Islanders are behind Stephen F. Austin (No. 5), Lamar (No.  6) and defending Southland Conference Champions McNeese State (No. 7).

"The men's team's steady ranking reflects a solid performance from the splash and now both teams will get the opportunity to improve their rankings at the pre-national meet at Terre Haute, Ind. on Oct. 19," Flanagan added.

The Islanders will next be in action on Oct. 12 at the University of Incarnate Word Cardinal Invitational in San Antonio. Both teams will then head to Terre Haute, Ind. for the NCAA Pre-Nationals on Oct. 19.
