CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Men's and Women's Cross Country teams will welcome several teams from the surrounding area for the 14th annual Islander Splash on Friday. The meet will take place at West Guth Park with the women's 5 km set to start at 6:20 p.m., while the men's 8 km will follow at 6:45 p.m. The Islanders will also host high school and middle school races, which will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday.
"Both the men and women have done pretty well this week in practice, but the weather will be a factor tomorrow since it's going to be pretty warm," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "But if we are hydrated well and we keep our ears up, then we are going to get off to a good start and should do well."
The men's team will look to keep its streak of winning its home meet alive, as the Islanders have won the Splash four years in a row, while the women look to win for a second year in a row. However, there will be some tough competition, especially on the women's side, as Rice and Sam Houston, two teams who finished ahead of the Islanders in the Rice Invitational, are competing.
The other schools rounding out the competition are Texas State, Houston, Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, UT – Pan American, Texas A&M – Kingsville, Texas A&M International, Rogers State and UT Brownsville (Start Boxes).
"We know the course better than anyone else," Flanagan added, "which is always good, and then you add in the fact that they can sleep in their own beds tonight and then they can have their friends and family cheering for them, that's going to help."
Both teams enter this weekend's race ranked in the top 15 regionally, as the men check in at No. 8 and the women find themselves 12th in the South Central Region.
On Saturday, the high school and middle school action will get underway with the 4/5A Varsity Boys 3-mile race at 8 a.m. and will conclude with the 8th Grade Boys 1.4 mile race at 11:25 a.m., with nine other races scheduled between them. The full schedule for Saturday's events can be found below, while the list of teams competing can be found HERE.
Awards will be awarded to the top three teams in Varsity and JV Divisions, while the top 10 individuals in all divisions will receive awards as well. T-shirts from the meet will also be available for purchase for $10.
Results for both the college races and the middle school/high school races can be found at http://flashresultstexas.com/2013/IslanderSplash13/ and will also be posted on www.goislanders.com after the races. West Guth Park is located just off the west side of I-37 at Exit 9, up River Road/Rand Morgan Road (View On Map).
