Cross Country Teams Both Take Sixth at Rice Invitational

HOUSTON – It was a hot and humid Friday evening for the running of the 38th annual Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational, where the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's teams each posted a sixth place finish.

"All in all, it's a good start," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "Cross country, unlike other sports, the early matchups aren't the primary focus. We're all looking to get better for the late meets and we're making progress. We're going to keep working hard and we'll be there when it counts."

Pacing the way for the men's team was Philipp Baar, who posted a time of 17:07, which was good enough for an 11th-place individual finish. The next two runners coming across the finish line for the Islanders were Jason Garcia (17:25) and Justin Adame (17:33), who secured 22nd and 28th place, respectively.

Rounding out the scores that counted for the team total were Paul Hansel and Edgar Martinez, who finished back-to-back in 40th and 41st, as Hansel barely edged out Martinez. Each finished with a time of 17:49.

The team's total score of 133 put the team in sixth place, just out of the reach of three Southland Conference schools. Stephen F. Austin and Lamar each combined for a total of 89, putting the Lumberjacks and Cardinals in a tie for third, while the McNeese State rounded out the top five with a total of 94 to put the Cowboys in fifth place.

The top two finishing teams on the men's side were Rice, which had four top-16 finishes for a total of 77, and Texas A&M, which finished in second with a score of 87.

On the women's side it was freshman Lara Huelsebusch with an outstanding performance in only her second collegiate race, leading the Islanders with a time of 15:55 to earn a 22nd-place finish. Also finishing in the top 30 for the Islanders were Brandie Garcia (15:58) and Ann-Kathrin Ott (16:01) who ran to 26th and 30th place, respectively. Jasmine Boutte (45th) and Vanessa Galindo (57th) rounded out the Islanders scorers.

These five runners' times combined to put A&M – Corpus Christi just outside of the top five overall spots, as the fifth-place team, Sam Houston State, posted a team total 152, with the Islanders combining for a total of 160.

The other four teams taking the top spots were A&M (29), meet host Rice (64) and Southland foes Lamar (80) and Stephen F. Austin (124).

The Islanders won't have to do any traveling for their next meet, when they host the Islanders Splash on Sept. 27 at West Guth Park. The women's 5K is set for 6 p.m., with the men's 8K to follow at 6:25 p.m.
