CORPUS CHRISTI – After a successful first meet, where both the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's teams took the top three spots, the Islanders cross country programs will head to Houston to compete in the 38th annual Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational. The women's 4k will start at 6:15 p.m. and the men's 6k will follow at 6:45 p.m.
"It's going to be a good early season meet for us in the fact that most of the Southland Conference powerhouses will be there as well as several other prominent programs," head coach Shawn Flanagan said.
Both Islanders teams will be looking to duplicate their success from last season's performance at the Rice Invitational. In 2012, the women's team finished in third place, with four of its runners finishing in the top-25. On the men's side, the Islanders placed fourth with five of their runners placing in the top-30.
"It will give us an idea of where we are," Flanagan continued. "Training has been going very well, and it's something that we are really looking forward to."
Both teams came into the 2013 season ranked in the USTFCCCA South Central Regional preseason rankings. After finishing the 2012 season in the eighth spot, the men's team jumped into the 2013 ranking one position higher in the seventh slot. On the women's side, A&M - Corpus Christi headed into the season ranked 14th in the region.
