FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi senior BreAnna Briggs has been named the Women's Southland Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the conference announced today.
"This is credit to her and a well-deserved honor," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "She is a senior and she's been a big part of this program since she got here."
In her first race of the season on Friday at the Rio Grande Valley Classic, hosted by Texas Pan-American, Briggs teamed with sophomore Jasmine Boutte to take the top spot in the eight-mile race with a time of 44:30. Briggs led the women's team with a 3.8-mile time of 21:55. The women's team claimed three of the top five spots at the race.
This is Briggs first Southland Conference weekly honor. On the men's side, sophomore Paul Hansel received honorable mention accolades for his first-place finish on Friday with teammate Patrick Kimeli. Hansel teamed with Kimeli to lead the men in the eight-mile race with a time of 37:05. Hansel led with a 3.8-mile time of 18:18.
The Islanders will next be in action on Fri., Sept. 14, in Houston, Texas, at the Rice Invite.
