CORPUS CHRISTI – Ashley Mills (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood HS), has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi cross country and track and field teams, Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Shawn Flanagan announced today. Mills will join the Islanders program for the 2012-13 season.
"We are very excited to have her next year," Flanagan said. "She's from a very strong program out of Kingwood. She has competitive times in the 5,000 meters and 800 meter times in cross country. She is running about 2:15 in the 800 and 18:38 in the 5k for cross country. Her high school has been consistently in the top in cross country and she brings some good experience at high caliber running."
During her senior season, Mills finished fourth in the two mile at the state cross country championships with a personal-best time of 11:26.30 to help lead her team to a second-place finish. She followed that performance by placing 14th at the Nike Cross Nationals South Regional in the 5k with a time of 18:48.60. At the 2012 District 14-5A track and field meet, she came in second with a personal-best time of 2:15.71 in the 800m.
She was named to the All-State Team in 2011 after clocking five personal-best times throughout the cross country season. At the Kingwood Andy Wells Invitational, she placed second in the 4000m with a personal-best time of 14:31.92. She clocked a personal-best time of 18:38.70 at the McNeil Invitational in the 5k to place right outside the top 10.
Prior to the 2011 season, Mills and the Mustangs were named to Marc Bloom's Top 25 U.S. High School Cross Country team's list after clinching the 2010 5A cross country championship title.
Mills will join Abel Koskey (Eldoret, Kenya/UTEP), Alexandra Fernandez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) Kim Ward (Corpus Christi/Moody HS), Regina Salinas (Corpus Christi/Incarnate Word), Samantha Hardin (Denison/ Montgomery HS) and Joel Gracia (La Joya/Juarez Lincoln HS) for the 2012-13 recruiting class.
