WACO, Texas – For the second straight year, junior Patrick Kimeli finished in seventh place in the men's 10k at the South Central Regional Championships Saturday to qualify for the NCAA National Championships. Kimeli crossed the line with a time of 30:55.9 to become the sixth runner in the last seven years to represent the Islanders at the NCAA Championships.

"It was a windy day and Patrick was in a pack running in the fifth slot," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "He had a tremendous last 500 meters to bring it home and he closed in nicely."

The No. 9 South Central Regional ranked men's team finished in ninth place with 255 points, two points behind Stephen F. Austin. No. 1-ranked Texas finished in first place with 40 points while No. 3-ranked Texas A&M finished in second with 56 points. No. 2-ranked Arkansas finished in third place (65 points) while Lamar (93 points) and UTSA (196) rounded out the top five.

"The guys tried coming from behind," Flanagan said. "Justin Adame and Angel Banda ran really well. We went in ranked ninth and finished ninth."

Behind Kimeli was Adame in 45th place with a time of 32:36.1. Adame improved his place and time from a year ago. Last season the sophomore finished in 93rd place with a time of 33:42.6. In third place for the Islanders was Banda in 68th place with a time of 33:15.4. Three spots behind Banda, was freshman Valentinas Rudys who crossed the line in 71st place with a time of 33:20.3. Rounding out the men's scores were freshmen Christoph Hintz and Paul Hansel who finished in 77th and 78th spots, respectively.

The women's squad finished the 6k race in 10th place, five spots back from their No. 5 South Central Regional ranking. The Islanders finished four points behind Stephen F. Austin (298 points). No. 2-ranked Arkansas won with 49 points and No. 1-ranked Texas finished in second with 69 points. Texas A&M placed third (90 points) while SMU (128 points) and Rice (129 points) rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth place.

The Islanders were led by seniors Julia Sambu and Sarah Kimaiyo. Sambu finished in 41st place with a time of 22:22.2, while Kimaiyo finished in 51st place with a time of 22:33.8. In third place for the Islanders was BreAnna Briggs in the 58th slot with a time of 22:44.0 and 11 spots behind Briggs was Cecilia Gonzalez with a time of 22:57.2. Rounding out the top five for the women's team was senior Danielle Higgins in the 83rd slot with a time of 23:20.0. Shelby Polasek and senior Kristine Burciaga finished in 101st and 104th spots, respectively.

With 1,000 meters to go, the Islanders No. 1 runner Burciaga was in 24th place when the illness that she had been fighting all week took a toll on her and she dropped 80 places in the last 1,000 meters. She gave it 110 percent and was determined to finish her last college race.

"She has been there when we needed her all season and her illness was just too much for a competitive finish for her, but she was not dropping out no matter how bad it hurt," Flanagan said. "The team finish is well shy of where we wanted to be in spite of good performances from Bree, Cecy, Julia and Sarah. "Kristine has been the rock on which the team has stood and she has really came through when we needed her."

Burciaga, Sambu, Kimaiyo and Higgins all competed in their final race as an Islander.

Kimeli will represent the Islanders at the 2011 NCAA National Championships on Monday, Nov. 21, in Terre Haute, Ind. at 11 a.m. CT.
