Patrick Kimeli Named Student-Athlete of the Week

CORPUS CHRISTI – Patrick Kimeli has been named the Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Pepsi. Kimeli earned the award for the second time this year following his performance last Monday at the Southland Conference Championships.

Kimeli garnered his second consecutive Southland Male Athlete of the Year award after clinching the men's 8k individual race at the Southland Championships on Monday in Nacogdoches, Texas. The native of Eldoret, Kenya crossed the line with a time of 24:50.6 to clinch his second consecutive individual title.

Kimeli joins former Islander and current assistant coach Shadrack Songok as the only conference runners to win the Southland cross country 8k event and be named Athlete of the Year in two consecutive years.

The junior helped pace the men's team to a third-place finish behind Lamar and UTSA. He also earned a place on the All-Conference team.

The cross country teams will be in action at the NCAA Regional in Waco, Texas, on Sat., Nov. 12, at 10 a.m.
