Women’s Cross Country Moves Up Two Spots in Latest USTFCCCA Regional Rankings

Week 4 Regional Poll

CORPUS CHRISTI – Following a third-place finish this weekend at the Grass Routes Grand Prix, the women's cross country team moved up two spots to fifth in the NCAA South Central Regional poll. The men's team maintained its spot in sixth place and second in the Southland behind Lamar, who took the men's title in Austin this weekend.

"The improvement in the women's rankings is a testament to the good racing that they have been doing all season," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "The same goes for the men.  We now need to train hard for the next four weeks, so that we can continue to improve as we enter the championship portion of the season."

The women's team placed third this weekend, behind No. 14-nationally ranked Texas and No. 25-nationally ranked Texas Tech. The squad currently sits three spots behind the Longhorns in the regional poll. The Islanders hold the top spot in the Southland in the South Central poll and are ahead of Big 12 opponents Baylor (6) and Texas A&M (7). Southland foes Lamar and UTSA each moved up in the regional poll. Lamar finished two spots behind the Islanders at the Grass Routes Grand Prix and moved up four spots to the eighth slot. UTSA sits one place back in ninth place.

The men's team stayed strong, holding the sixth spot in the South Central Regional poll and sit in second place in the Southland. The Islanders are behind No. 4-ranked Lamar, who clinched their third straight meet at the Grass Routes Grand Prix. The men's squad jumped in front of UTSA, who dropped two spots to the seventh slot. The Islanders are three spots behind No. 24-nationally ranked Texas (3), who the Islanders finished just behind this weekend.

The Islanders will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival on Sat., Oct. 15, at 9:30 a.m.
