Kimeli Named SLC Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Official Southland Conference Release

FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi junior Patrick Kimeli has been named the Male Southland Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the conference announced today.

"Patrick is ahead of where he was last year at this time, so it bodes well for his long-term prospects to defend his SLC title and return to nationals," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "He is a real joy to work with and I am very glad that he is getting this honor."

For the second straight meet, Kimeli finished as the top individual runner in the men's race against nine other schools. He led the men's 5k, crossing the line with a time of 16:52, three seconds ahead of second-place finisher Alex Littlewood of McNeese State.

The Eldoret, Kenya, native helped the Islanders to the runner-up spot with 67 points, finishing behind No. 4 Lamar, which took first with 36 points. The Islanders finished in front of three higher ranked teams in the USTFCCCA Regional rankings, including host No. 8 Rice (3) along with Southland foes No. 7 Stephen F. Austin (4) and No. 6 McNeese State (6).

The runner-up finish helped the men's team move up four spots in the rankings to the No. 6 slot, behind Lamar and UTSA in the Southland.

This is Kimeli's second Southland Conference weekly honor. He is the reigning Southland Male Athlete of the Year and reigning Southland champion.

On the women's side, senior Danielle Higgins, received honorable mention accolades for her fourth place-finish at the Rice Invitational in her first 4k run of her collegiate career. Higgins led the Islanders with a personal best of 14:18 and helped her team to a runner-up finish with 45 points, one spot behind host Rice, who won with 41 points.

The Islanders will return home to host the Islander Splash on Fri., Sept. 23, at West Guth Park. The women's 5k will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the men's 8k at 6:25 p.m.
