CORPUS CHRISTI - The Islander Cross Country Camp wrapped up last weekend after another successful summer for the Islanders staff. The camp turned out over 100 youths for the four-day event.
Though the numbers were slightly down from previous years, Director of Track and Field Shawn Flanagan was pleased with the turnout.
"Obviously we would have liked to have a few more kids attending, but with the financial state out there, I'm happy that people see our camp as a valuable investment," Flanagan said. "We still had a good number of campers and I really think everyone got a lot out of it. The staff really enjoyed the time with the campers too."
In addition to running and working on technique, campers also took part in fun activities ranging from Ultimate Frisbee on the beach to movies at night. The staff also provided lectures, ran aquatic training sessions and performed video analysis with runners to help them get the most out of their bodies.
"I really think the video aspect of our camp is something that makes us unique," Flanagan said. "Technology can be used in so many ways, and we think that when the kids see themselves doing something, it's a lot more effective than us simply telling them what they are doing."
The Islanders Cross Country season is just over a month away, as the team will open 2011 on Friday, Sept. 2, at the UTPA Bronc Relay.
