Baresh, Brink and Phelps Named to Southland Conference Preseason Teams

FULL SOUTHLAND RELEASE

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team placed two players on the All-Southland Conference Preseason First Team, with senior right side hitter Brianna Brink and returning all-conference first-team selection Ivy Baresh earning the accolades, the league announced today. Senior Ashley Phelps earned preseason second-team honors for the first time in her career.

"I'm really happy to see Ivy and Brianna named to the preseason first team, and for Ashley to be at the top of the second team," head coach Tony Graystone said. "These three players are the core of our team and have earned their place among the top players in the Southland. More importantly, they have each looked very sharp during the preseason and are ready to lead us to another strong year. This is a very exciting time for Islanders Volleyball, and I appreciate the work they have put into their individual game and in raising the standards and expectations for our program."

Baresh, who was tabbed First Team All-Southland last season led the Islanders in kills (379), aces (29) and digs (399), while starting in 30 of the Islanders' 32 matches. She collected 16 double-doubles during her sophomore campaign and was a consistent all-around player for the Islanders. The Arlington, Texas native, finished fourth in the conference in kills, seventh in kills per set with 3.38 and ninth in digs. She also registered 3.56 digs per set, which placed 15th in the conference.

For the second consecutive year Brink was named to the preseason first team. The Corona, Calif. native started in 30 of the Islanders' 32 matches last season and led the Islanders in conference play with 212 kills and a .262 hitting percentage. Overall she finished the season seventh in the conference with a total of 350 kills and 11th with 3.10 kills per set.

Phelps earned a spot on the preseason second team after finishing second on the team last season with 3.30 kills per set. In Southland play, the senior matched a team-high 3.37 kills per set and earned a spot on the Southland Conference All-Tournament team.

The Islanders return seven letterwinners from a team that finished the 2013 season with a 20-12 record, including a school-best 13-5 record in Southland Conference play. A&M - Corpus Christi just wrapped the first week of practices and will open the season on Friday, Aug 29, in Waco, Texas, at the two-day Baylor Invite against Portland.
