Islanders Volleyball Adds Morgan Thomas as Assistant Coach

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team has added Morgan Thomas as an assistant coach, head coach Tony Graystone announced today. Thomas comes to the Island University after spending the last two years as a graduate assistant for the University of South Carolina.

"Morgan is a great hire for us and a terrific addition for Islanders volleyball," Graystone said. "Her previous experience working at South Carolina has definitely prepared her well for her role with us, and as a former middle blocker she will really compliment our coaching staff. We've enjoyed getting to know Morgan and seeing how she will impact our program and are thrilled for her to join us."

Thomas, a native of Fort Lauderdale Fla., was a four-year starter for USC Upstate and a standout middle blocker. She set numerous school records, including the top record in USC Upstate Division I history with 1,049 career kills, and the top record for career blocks with 315. The former team captain also was the first All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection in program history in 2011. Off the court, Thomas served as a marketing intern in the athletics department, while being highly involved on the Executive Board on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Additionally, she helped incoming students transition into college as a University 101 Peer Leader.

"First, I want to thank Tony and Kendra for bringing me on to join the Islanders volleyball family," Thomas said. "They both share a strong passion for the game and a competitive energy that is so contagious. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from such an amazing staff, and I am excited to get started with a team that is coming off an impressive season."

Following her successful collegiate career, Thomas landed her first job as a graduate assistant for the South Carolina indoor volleyball team in July of 2012. With the Gamecocks, Thomas was responsible for coordinating and directing community service initiatives for student-athletes, while assisting with team travel and summer camps.

Following the 2012 season, Thomas moved into the director of operations role for the Gamecocks 2013 sand volleyball team, and was the primary Under Armour and equipment liaison. During her time under head coach Moritz Moritz, Thomas oversaw the total operations of home games, while working closely with the compliance and business offices on a daily basis.

In addition to her college experience, Thomas served as the head coach for two of the top club volleyball programs in the state of South Carolina, the Club South Volleyball Club in Spartanburg, S.C. and the Magnum Volleyball Club in Columbia, S.C.

She graduated from USC Upstate in 2012 with a bachelor's in communications and a minor in sociology before earning her master's in sport and entertainment management from the University of South Carolina.

Thomas attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School and played for the Boomers Volleyball Club from 2005-2008.

Thomas will join Graystone and assistant coach Kendra Potts as they host six summer camps in July before starting official practices on Monday, Aug. 11.

The Islanders are coming off an impressive 2013 season. The team finished with a 20-12 record, including a school-best 13-5 record in Southland Conference play. The Islanders also made history by advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time.
