CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team has signed Kristyn Nicholson (Lewisville, Texas/Lewisville HS) and Brittany Gilpin (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) to National Letters of Intent, head coach Tony Graystone announced today.
"We're really happy with the 2014 class and excited about the impact they'll have on our program," Graystone said.
Nicholson, a setter from Lewisville, Texas was on the AVCA High School All-American watch list and will look to fill the void of Logen Bourque, who is completing her final year of eligibility. Nicholson was named to the District 5-5A First Team as a junior and earned All-Texas Team Honorable Mention honors in 2012.
"Kristyn has great hands, understands how to run an offense and will give us a physical presence at the net," Graystone said. "She has received great training at the high school and club level, and set for the 18 Open Division National Championship team last summer. I anticipate a very short learning curve with her and we should see her compete for our setter position right away."
Gilpin, a 5-foot-11 middle blocker from Westside High School was the District 20-5A Player of the Year. She was also named to the PrepVolleyball.com senior aces top 250 list and will add depth to the middle blocker position with the departure of Sarah Sanchez at the end of this season.
"Brittany is pretty much everything we look for in a middle blocker," Graystone said. "She's very fast, can attack anywhere on the net and is also an excellent blocker. Brittany will give us a lot more offensive balance and be a perfect fit in our system."
The Islanders will host the Southland Conference Tournament on Nov. 22-24 in the Dugan Wellness Center. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi received the No. 5 seed and will open the first round against No. 4 Sam Houston Sate on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
