Islanders Roll Past Cardinals 3-0 for 18th Win
CORPUS CHRISTI – Brianna Brink posted 13 kills and Logen Bourque tallied her 11th double-double of the season to help the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team clinch its 18th win of the season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-22) sweep over Lamar Wednesday at the Dugan Wellness Center.
Brink hit a solid .591 in the match while Bourque recorded 35 assists and 11 digs to propel the Islanders' offense. Shayla Maldonado powered the defense with 17 digs of the Islanders' 53 digs. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (18-11, 12-5 SLC) hit .252 in the match and held the Cardinals (9-20, 7-10 SLC) to just .123 hitting.
The Islanders opened with a 2-0 lead after a strong offensive outing in the first two sets. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi hit .278 in the first set, which featured 12 ties and seven lead changes. The team held the Cardinals to just .150 hitting and Sarah Sanchez propelled the team with four kills while Bourque passed out 12 assists.
The Islanders and Cardinals battled back-and-forth throughout the first set until Lamar pushed ahead 13-11 on a 3-0 run. The Islanders rallied back to knot the score at 14-14 after a kill by Shaquinn Parker and a ball handling error by the Cardinals. After trading points over the next several players, the Islanders forced Lamar to call a timeout at 20-19 after Ashley Phelps recorded a kill and Sanchez followed with an ace. Following the timeout, it was all Islanders scoring five straight points to seal a 25-19 victory.
In the second set, the Islanders jumped out to a 9-3 early lead and stayed in front through the whole set. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi built a 16-9 lead after a 4-1 run that included a pair of kills by Brink, a kill by Sanchez and the two teamed up for a block assist. The Cardinals however rallied back to cut the Islanders' lead to two after Megan Schwartz tallied three consecutive kills. Following an Islanders' timeout, Parker tacked on a kill before both teams traded kills. After straight kills by Brink, the Islanders scored three consecutive points to capture the second set 25-18. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi hit .294 in the second set behind Brink's five kills.
The Islanders squeezed out a third-set victory after battling with the Cardinals throughout the set. After the Islanders built an 8-7 lead, Lamar scored six straight to take a 12-8 lead and the team maintained its lead until an 8-2 run by the Islanders gave the home team a 19-18 advantage. Both teams rallied before Phelps picked up a kill and Parker gave the Islanders the lead for good with a solo block at 22-20. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi clinched the set and the match with a 3-2 run to win 25-22. Brink registered six kills in the set while Maldonado posted seven digs.
The team will wrap the regular season Saturday, Nov. 16, against Sam Houston State on Senior Day in the Dugan Wellness Center. The Islanders will play tribute to Bourque, Sanchez and Renee Ramirez.
