CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team dropped a 3-0 loss (25-20, 25-21, 25-20) to Houston Baptist Saturday afternoon at the Dugan Wellness Center. Ivy Baresh and Brianna Brink led the Islanders with nine kills apiece and Haley Satterwhite Day chipped in eight. The Huskies (13-15, 8-7 SLC) controlled the net with six blocks and hit .218 in the match.
Logen Bourque dished out 30 assists for the Islanders (17-11, 11-5 SLC) while Baresh led the Islanders' defense with 15 digs and Shayla Maldonado added 12. For HBU, Caiti Wenger (14) and Jessica Wooten (11) led the team in double figure in kills and four Huskies finished in double figures in digs.
In the first set, Houston Baptist jumped out to a 10-3 lead on a 6-0 run. Baresh followed with a kill, before the Islanders trimmed the deficit to five with a 4-1 run. During the run Ashley Phelps and Sarah Sanchez each tallied a kill. The Islanders and Huskies rallied back-and-forth over the next several plays, but HBU propelled its way to a 25-20 first set-victory on .178 hitting.
The Islanders bounced back early in the second set to take a 7-4 lead after a kill by Baresh. After trading points, Brink put down a kill at 12-10 and helped jumpstart a 3-1 run to build a 14-11 lead. However, the Huskies responded with a 6-2 run of their own to take a 17-16 lead. Following an Islanders' timeout, Brink tacked on a kill, but three consecutive points by the Huskies gave the visitors a 20-17 lead. After another Islanders' timeout, HBU built a 23-18 lead on a 3-1 run. Baresh followed with a kill before a Huskies' hitting error pulled the Islanders within three. HBU finished the set with a 25-21 victory on a 2-1 run that included kills by Wenger and Ashlee Vann.
The Islanders gained momentum out of the break and opened with a 5-1 lead in the third set. However, the Huskies fought back in a set that featured 12 ties and five lead changes. After trading points back-and-forth, Baresh and Sanchez helped keep the Islanders in front 16-15 with a block assist and Sanchez put down a kill. After a HBU kill, Baresh tallied her ninth kill of the match to give the Islanders' a two-point cushion. The Huskies answered with a 4-1 run to garner a 20-19 lead. Satterwhite followed with a kill, but five straight points by HBU capped the set at 25-20.
The Islanders will host Lamar next on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
