CORPUS CHRISTI – Sophomore Ivy Baresh recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs while three other Islanders finished in double figures in kills to help power the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team to a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-19, 25-8) over Nicholls. The Islanders (16-10, 10-4 SLC) hit .353 in the match and limited the Colonels (5-19, 2-12 SLC) to just .120 hitting Thursday evening at the Dugan Wellness Center.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi exploded for 51 kills in the match with Shaquinn Parker, Brianna Brink and Haley Satterwhite Day all posting 10 kills apiece. The Islanders' defense also put together a solid performance with 54 digs. Along with Baresh's 13 digs, Shayla Maldonado added 13 and Hailey King collected 10. Logen Bourque had another impressive match with 38 assists to go along with three blocks, five kills and four digs.
The Islanders jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the opening set and extended its lead to 17-11 before Nicholls pulled within four on a 4-0 run. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi answered back with a 3-0 run that included a pair of kills by Satterwhite and one from Bourque. After trading kills back-and-forth the Islanders capped the set at 25-16 on a 3-0 run. The Islanders hit .316 in the first set and held the Colonels to just .139 hitting.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi carried over its momentum into the second set and opened with an early 11-5 lead. The Islanders padded its lead to 13-8 after a kill by Parker, however, a pair of kills by Nicholls trimmed the Islanders' lead to three at 13-10. Baresh followed with a kill and a Colonel hitting error pushed the Islanders back up by five. After rallying back-and-forth the Islanders built a 22-14 lead after Parker and Bourque put down consecutive kills and Sarah Sanchez followed with an ace to make it 22-13. The Colonels scored three straight before Parker picked up a kill to give the Islanders a seven-point cushion. Nicholls followed with another 3-0 run before Parker responded with straight kills to finish the set at 25-19. The Islanders hit .324 as a team in the set, while limiting the Colonels to just .212 hitting. Parker tallied seven kills in the set to lead the Islanders' offense.
The Islanders came out in the third set and put together a dominating performance. The team built a 14-6 lead after Bourque and Parker hit back-to-back kills. After a Colonel timeout sparked a 2-0 run by the visitors, the Islanders scored 11 straight points to win 25-8 and clinch the set 3-0. During the run, Satterwhite posted three kills, Baresh recorded two while freshman Morgan Carlson, Parker and Brink each chipped in one apiece and Bourque added an ace. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi hit a set-high .433 and committed just four errors in the set.
The Islanders will host the McNeese State Cowgirls next on Saturday, Nov. 2. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Dugan Wellness Center.
