CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss (27-25, 25-20, 25-18) to Northwestern State Saturday afternoon at the Dugan Wellness Center. In a back-and-forth battle, the Lady Demons (12-9, 8-1 SLC) controlled the net with seven blocks and snapped the Islanders seven-match winning streak.
Ivy Baresh recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 12 digs to lead the Islanders (14-8, 9-2 SLC). Brianna Brink also collected 10 kills for the Islanders' offense. Senior Logen Bourque tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 33 assists and 10 digs. Shayla Maldonado powered the defense with 20 digs and Hailey King chipped in 12.
The Lady Demons controlled the net with seven blocks and recorded six aces while capitalizing on the Islanders' six service errors. Stacey DiFrancesco led Northwestern State with a match-high 16 kills.
The Islanders and Lady Demons battled in the first set, which featured 15 ties and four lead changes. After Northwestern State evened the set at 11-11 with consecutive points, the Islanders put together a 4-0 run to push ahead 15-11. During the run, Brink tallied three kills. Northwestern State rallied back with four points of their own to knot the set at 15-15. However a 5-1 run by the Lady Demons put the visitors up 20-17. The Islanders followed with two straight points to pull within one but a 4-0 run by Northwestern State forced the Islanders to call their second timeout of the set at 23-19. The Islanders gained some momentum out of the timeout with a 4-0 run, which included two kills by Shaquinn Parker and a kill by Brink. With the set tied at 23-23, both teams rallied back and forth until the Lady Demons captured the first set at 27-25.
In the second set, the Islanders stayed even with the Lady Demons early on until a 4-0 run by Northwestern State gave them a three-point cushion. The Islanders pulled within two on several occasions, but two kills by the Lady Demons and an attacking error by the Islanders pushed the team ahead by five. Parker and Brink followed with a block assist at 22-18, but a 4-1 run by Northwestern State gave the visitors a 25-20 second-set victory.
The Islanders tied seven times with the Lady Demons in the third set, but a 6-0 run by Northwestern State put the Lady Demons up for good at 16-11. The Islanders put a 3-1 run together with a pair of kills by Baresh and kill by Parker to trim the deficit to three. The Lady Demons however pulled away with an 8-4 run to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
The Islanders will head back on the road next week to face Oral Roberts and undefeated Central Arkansas in its final road trip of the season. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will take on Oral Roberts on Thursday, Oct. 24 before traveling to Conway, Ark. to face Central Arkansas on Saturday, Oct. 26.
