Islanders, Lady Demons Meet Saturday at the Dugan Wellness Center

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will look to continue its seven-match winning streak Saturday, Oct. 19, when they host Northwestern State at the Dugan Wellness Center. The Islanders are off to the best Southland Conference start in program history with a 9-1 record including a 14-7 overall record. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi is coming off a 3-1 victory Thursday night against Stephen F. Austin in its annual Dig Pink match.

The Islanders have won seven straight, including 11 of its last 12 matches and currently sits behind undefeated Central Arkansas (8-0) in the conference standings and are tied with Sam Houston State (8-1) and the Lady Demons (7-1).

Ivy Baresh collected her 11th double-double of the season on Thursday with 14 kills and 16 digs, while Brianna Brink recorded a match-high 18 kills on an impressive .419 hitting. Also finishing in double figures in kills was Ashley Phelps with 13 kills. The Islanders hit .270 in the match and limited the Ladyjacks to just .117 hitting.

Senior Logen Bourque passed out 52 assists Thursday, her sixth match of the season where she has tallied 50 or more assists in a match. She now has dished out 4,065 assists in her career and is the first Islander to reach the milestone. Bourque also helped ignite the Islanders' defense with 14 digs. This week's Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Shayla Maldonado registered 21 digs and Hailey King tacked on 13. The Islanders out-blocked the Ladyjacks 9-6 and freshman Shaquinn Parker picked up a career-high six block assists.

The Islanders currently sit in second place in the conference in assists (13.05) and digs (16.49) and third in kills (13.68). The Islanders rank 28th in the nation in digs and 32nd in assists.

Bourque is ranked 27th in the nation in assists per set with 11.16, which sits in second place in the conference. Baresh is ranked fourth in the conference with 3.64 kills per set and 15th in digs with 3.56. The sophomore is also ranked 14th in service aces. Brink is right behind Baresh offensively with 3.01 kills per set (12th SLC) and 229 total kills. Along with Maldonado, Hailey King has powered the team defensively with 4.03 digs per set (9th SLC) and 278 digs on the year.

Northwestern State enters Saturday's match with an 11-9 record including a 7-1 record in conference play. The Lady Demons have won four straight, including 10 of its last 11 matches. Northwestern State is coming off a 3-1 victory at Houston Baptist Thursday night. Prior to that, the Lady Demons topped Nicholls and McNeese State. Ashley Elrod leads Northwestern State with 3.00 kills per set and Caiti O'Connell is second with 2.93 kills per set. Emily Johnson (5.54 assists per set) and Natalie Jaeger (4.70 assists per set) run the Lady Demons' offense. Defensively, Keelie Arneson leads the team with 5.20 digs per set and Glynna Johnson has registered 65 blocks on the year for the Lady Demons.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will meet the Lady Demons for the 11th time in program history with Northwestern State holding the 7-3 series advantage. Last season, the Islanders split with the Lady Demons. The Islanders dropped a 3-1 loss on the road in the first match before bouncing back to win 3-1 in the second meeting at home in the annual Dig PinK match.

The Islanders will head back on the road next week to face Oral Roberts and undefeated Central Arkansas in its final road trip of the season. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will take on Oral Roberts on Thursday, Oct. 24 before traveling to Conway, Ark. to face Central Arkansas on Saturday, Oct. 26.
