Shayla Maldonado Named Student-Athlete of the Week

CORPUS CHRISTI – Shayla Maldonado has been named the Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Pepsi. Maldonado picked up the award after leading the Islanders to two Southland Conference road wins.

Maldonado powered the Islanders' defense last week with 6.88 digs per set. She helped lead the Islanders to a 7-1 mark in conference play with back-to-back career matches.

In her first conference start at the libero position, the sophomore tallied a career-high 21 digs to lift the Islanders to a 3-1 victory at New Orleans. On Saturday at Southeastern La., the Katy, Texas, native had another impressive day with a career-high in her second straight match with 34 digs, which was just three digs short of tying the Islanders all-time single match record for a four-set match. She also chipped in two of the Islanders' season match-high nine service aces. For the week, she registered 55 total digs.

Maldonado also recorded 11 digs Monday night, as the Islanders got the week started off with a 3-0 sweep of Nicholls to improve to 8-1 in conference play.

A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball will return to the Dugan Wellness Center on Thursday, as they host Stephen F. Austin for the Islanders annual Dig Pink game.
