Lady Lions Up Next for Islanders Volleyball

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will continue its road swing in Louisiana on Saturday, Oct. 12, when it travels to Hammond, La. to take on Southeastern La. The Islanders are coming off its sixth Southland Conference victory of the season and are looking to keep its four-match winning streak alive against the Lady Lions.
The Islanders are off to the best Southland Conference start in program history with a 6-1 record including an 11-7 overall record. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi has won eight of its last nine matches and will meet the Lady Lions for the ninth time in program history. The squad currently sits behind undefeated Central Arkansas (6-0) in the conference standings and is tied with Sam Houston State (6-1).
The Islanders are coming off a 3-1 victory (19-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-16) Thursday night against first-year conference member New Orleans. The team finished with three players in double figures in kills and tallied a season-high 10 blocks. Brianna Brink powered the Islanders' offense with 15 kills on .303 hitting while Ivy Baresh collected 14 kills, nine digs and tied a career-high five blocks. Freshman Shaquinn Parker had an impressive night with 11 kills on .444 hitting while recording four blocks and Ashley Phelps chipped in nine kills. Senior Logen Bourque ran the offense with 51 assists and tallied eight digs. The Islanders' defense also had a solid performance with 61 digs, including a career-high 21 from Shayla Maldonado.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi currently leads the conference in assists with 12.98 per set, which ranks 33rd in the nation. The Islanders are third in the conference in kills with 13.64 per set and third in digs with 15.82 per set.
Bourque is currently ranked 36th in the nation with 10.91 assists per set, which is good for second place in the conference. She has collected 720 assists this season for a total of 3,926 assists in her career. Baresh is leading the Islanders' offense this season with 3.48 kills per set (4th SLC) and is second on the team in digs with 3.30 digs per set. Brink is right behind Baresh with 3.02 kills per set (14th SLC) and 196 total kills.
Defensively, Hailey King powers the team with 3.95 digs per set (9th SLC) and 257 digs on the year. Parker is leading the Islanders at the net with 39 total blocks this season, including 32 block assists.
Southeastern La. enters Saturday's match with a 6-13 record including a 0-7 record in conference play. The Lady Lions are coming off a 3-2 loss to Houston Baptist at home Thursday night. Prior to that, Southeastern La. had dropped six straight. Tiffany Thomas leads the Lady Lions with 3.15 kills per set while Mikayla Shippy runs the offense with 9.35 assists per set. Defensively, Morgan Todd leads the team with 4.27 digs per set and Rachael Bunn has recorded 51 total blocks on the year.
Saturday's match will mark the ninth meeting between the two schools with the Islanders holding the 8-0 series advantage. The Islanders have won eight straight matches over the Lady Lions, with the last two coming last season. In the first meeting, the Islanders sealed a 3-1 victory in Hammond and followed it with a 3-0 win in Corpus Christi.
The Islanders will wrap its Louisiana road trip on Monday, Oct. 14, when the team takes on Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
