CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team clinched its fourth straight sweep Friday evening with a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-18, 25-19) over Texas-Pan American in non-conference play in the Dugan Wellness Center. The Islanders' offense put together an explosive performance with 51 kills while hitting a season-high .374 in front of their home crowd.
The Islanders improved to 7-6 and were powered by sophomore Ivy Baresh who matched a career-high 16 kills on .452 hitting and Haley Satterwhite Day matched a season-high nine kills on 2.08 hitting. Senior Logen Bourque dished out 34 assists while recording eight kills and seven digs. Hailey King propelled the Islanders' defense with 21 of the Islanders' 52 digs, just one short of tying her career high. The Islanders limited the Broncs (9-5) to just .129 hitting.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi fell behind early in the first set before pushing ahead 7-6 with an ace by Baresh. the Islanders and Broncs rallied back-and-forth before a 6-0 run by the Islanders put them in front for good at 18-12. During the run, freshman Shaquinn Parker slammed a pair of kills and Baresh and Brianna Brink each added one apiece. After a service error, Baresh and Brink hammered consecutive kills to build a seven-point cushion and force UTPA to call their second timeout of the set. Following the timeout, the Islanders went on a 9-2 run to close out the first set 25-14. The Islanders hit a .300 in the first set and limited the Broncs to just .081 hitting. Baresh highlighted the set with five kills on .385 hitting while Bourque dished out 10 assists and King tallied nine digs.
The Islanders kept the momentum going in the second set with a 10-6 early start to force a UTPA timeout. Baresh tallied four of her set-high six kills to help ignite the offense. The Islanders stayed out in front the rest of the way and built their biggest lead of the set at 17-10 after earning straight points on a kill by Satterwhite and an attacking error by UTPA. The Broncs drew within five on a 4-0 run but the Islanders powered through with back-to-back kills by Bourque and Parker to pad the lead to seven. After trading points, the Islanders clinched the set 25-18 on an attacking error by the Broncs. The Islanders hit .412 in the set and limited UTPA to just .250 hitting.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi jumped out to an early lead in the final set and maintained the lead the rest of the way. The Islanders built an 11-6 lead on a 4-0 run to force UTPA to call a timeout. During the run, Renee Ramirez served up an ace and Satterwhite added two kills. The Islanders saw their lead evaporate to two, with a 4-0 run by the Broncs, but a 4-1 run by the Islanders extended the lead to 17-12. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi then powered their way to a 25-19 third-set clinching victory with a 5-2 run. The Islanders hit a set-high .424 and limited the Broncs to just .083 hitting.
The Islanders will head back on the road next week to take on Sam Houston State and Lamar in conference play. The Islanders will first take on the Bearkats on Thursday, Sept. 26, in Huntsville, Texas, before taking on the Cardinals on Saturday, Sept. 28, in Beaumont, Texas.
