Islanders Continue Conference Play on the Road Thursday at HBU

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will continue Southland Conference play Thursday at first-year conference member Houston Baptist. The Islanders will look to keep its winning streak alive at 7 p.m. at Sharp Gym.

The Islanders are coming off its second consecutive match sweep after cruising to a 3-0 victory Tuesday night over McNeese State in the conference opener in Lake Charles, La. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi hit .330 as a team while limiting the Cowgirls to just .238 hitting. Ivy Baresh and Brianna Brink put together a dominant performance to lead the offense. Baresh led the team with 12 kills on .333 hitting and Brink slammed down 11 kills on .450 hitting. Logen Bourque propelled the Islanders' offense with 35 assists and the Islanders' defense came up big with Bourque, Megan Olivarez and Hailey King all finishing with eight digs apiece. The Islanders also controlled the net with four blocks while limiting the Cowgirls to just two.

Baresh is leading the Islanders with 3.41 kills per set and 133 on the year. She currently sits in fifth place in the conference standings while Brink is ranked 11th with 2.87 kills and 112 on the season. Bourque runs the offense and has dished out 415 assists and sits in third place in the SLC with 10.38 assists per set. Baresh is also in the top 10 in service aces and King leads the defense with 3.59 digs per set, which is good for 11th place in the SLC. The Islanders are second in the standings in assists with 12.52 per set and fourth in kills with 13.19 per set.

Thursday's match will be the first conference match for the Huskies. HBU comes into the contest on a three-match losing streak and a 5-6 record. The Huskies have secured victories against Louisiana, UTPA, Alabama, and two wins against Prairie View A&M. Madeline Gaffney leads the Huskies with 101 kills on .308 hitting and Kayla Armer runs the offense with 422 assists and 10.55 assists per set. HBU is hitting .188 as a team and are defensively led by Megan McStravick who averages 3.11 digs per set.

The Islanders and Huskies will meet for the fourth time on Thursday with the Huskies holding a 2-1 series advantage. The last time the two teams met up was in 2011 in Houston. The Islanders dropped a tough 3-2 match. Bourque dished out 41 assists in the match and tallied a team-high 22 digs.

The Islanders will return to the Coastal Bend Friday, Sept. 20, to take on UTPA in the Dugan Wellness Center.
