Volleyball Falls 3-0 to UTSA in the Hilton Maverick Classic


ARLINGTON – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team fought hard against UTSA in a rematch of Monday night's home opener, but costly errors by the Islanders lifted the Roadrunners to a 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-19) victory Saturday in the second of three matches at the Hilton Maverick Classic.

Sophomore Ivy Baresh led the Islanders (3-6) with a team-high 14 kills and junior Brianna Brink added 13 kills, one shy of her season-high. Logen Bourque dished out 35 assists and Hailey King finished in double digits with 13 digs. The Roadrunners (6-4) were paced by McKenize Adams, Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year, who tallied a match-high 21 kills. UTSA out-blocked the Islanders 7-4 and capitalized on the Islanders' 10 service errors.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi started out the match strong with an early 10-7 lead in the first set. The Islanders stayed out in front until three straight points by the Roadrunners evened the set at 12-12. Brink answered with a kill to help jumpstart a 3-0 run by the Islanders to make it 15-12. The Islanders and Roadrunners rallied back-and-forth until a 3-0 run by UTSA knotted the set at 17-17. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi followed with three consecutive points, including two kills by Baresh to build a 20-17 lead. However, the Roadrunners answered with a 3-0 of their own to force the Islanders to take a timeout at 20-20. Baresh and Adams traded kills before the Islanders pushed ahead at 23-21 with a kill by Baresh and an UTSA attacking error. After a kill by Adams, Brink smashed a kill to give the Islanders a 24-22 lead. UTSA battled back to score two straight points to knot the set at 24-24. After trading points back-and-forth, UTSA sealed the set, 28-26, with two straight points on consecutive Islanders' mishaps. Baresh led the Islanders with seven kills and Bourque passed out 13 assists.

In the second set, the Islanders fell behind 13-7 before the team recovered with a 6-0 run to knot the set at 13-13. During the run, Sarah Sanchez and Ashley Phelps chipped in kills and Baresh added an ace. The Islanders rallied back-and-forth with the Roadrunners until three straight points by UTSA forced the Islanders to take their first timeout of the set at 19-16. Out of the timeout, the Roadrunners put together a 6-2 run to capture the set, 25-18. Adams hit .583 in the second set and recorded eight kills while Baresh added four kills for the Islanders.

The final set was close throughout with 10 ties. The Islanders took a 12-11 lead after two straight kills by Brink and a kill by Sanchez. Both teams rallied back-and-forth until a 3-0 run by the Roadrunners put them in front 15-13. The Islanders fought back to score three straight to tie the set at 17-17. After trading kills, the Roadrunners put together a 7-1 run to end the set at 25-19 and the match.

The Islanders will wrap the classic tonight at 7 p.m. against UT Arlington.
