CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will open its home schedule Monday, Sept. 9, vs. UTSA at the Dugan Wellness Center. The Islanders are coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Rice Invitational I including a five-set thrilling victory over UALR.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi comes into the match with a 2-4 record while the Roadrunners hold a 3-4 record after compiling a 2-2 record in the UTSA Classic over the weekend.
The Islanders tallied a 9-1 record last season at the Dugan and opened the season 2-0 at home. The team is looking to clinch their first victory over UTSA in program history. Monday's contest will mark the 17th meeting between the two teams with the last meeting taking place in San Antonio on Oct. 19, 2011. Prior to that, the Islanders played host to the Roadrunners on Oct. 4, 2011.
Ivy Baresh is leading the Islanders with 3.04 kills per set. She has 70 kills this season and put together an impressive weekend at the Rice Invitational I. She registered 3.45 kills per set over the two days to go along with 32 digs and was named to the All-Tournament team. The sophomore recorded 10 kills and 10 digs against Rice and followed it with a career-high 16 kills and a team-high 16 digs vs. LSU. She hit a team-high .344 and picked up her fourth double-double of the season against the Tigers. In the final match of the invitational against UALR, Baresh tallied 12 kills to help the Islanders clinch the victory.
Logen Bourque is averaging 9.61 assists per set and leads the team with seven aces. Defensively, the Islanders are powered by Hailey King who has 79 digs on the season and is averaging 3.43 digs per set. Freshman Shaquinn Parker has 11 blocks this season including eight block assists. The Islanders hit a season-match high .268 against UALR and equaled a season-match high seven blocks.
The Roadrunners have wins against UC Davis, Lamar and Loyola Marymount this season and are led by McKenzie Adams who has 142 kills on .265 hitting. Brandy Huskey runs UTSA's offense with 9.86 assists per set. Annie Kunes leads the defense with 5.54 digs per set. As a team, UTSA hits .243 while limiting its opponents to .225 hitting.
The Islanders will head back on the road this weekend for the Hilton Maverick Classic in Arlington, Texas. The team will face Mississippi Valley State on Friday, Sept. 13, before facing the Roadrunners and UT Arlington on Saturday, Sept. 14, for its final three pre-conference matches.
