Islanders Fall Short 3-0 to Owls in the Rice Invitational I


HOUSTON – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team dropped a tough 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-19) loss to Rice (1-3) Friday evening in the Rice Invitational I at Tudor Fieldhouse. Logen Bourque and Ivy Baresh led the Islanders (1-3) with double-doubles.

The Islanders' (1-3) defense was scrappy with 59 digs led by Brink (15), Hailey King (12), Bourque (12) and Baresh (10) all in double-figures. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi also served a season-high .982 for the match with Brink and Bourque each chipping in an ace apiece.

In the opening set, the Islanders fell behind early 8-6, but back-to-back kills by Sarah Sanchez and Brink evened the score at 8-8. The Owls built a 14-9 lead after a mini 3-0 run to force the Islanders to take their first timeout of the set. Baresh followed with a kill before both teams traded points until 16-12. Rice extended their lead to 19-12 before Shaquinn Parker recorded her third kill of the set. The Owls put together another 3-0 run before Sanchez got red-hot with three consecutive kills, but a kill by Rice and an error by the Islanders capped the first set 25-18. Sanchez tallied a team-high four kills in the first set while Brink recorded nine digs.           

In the second set, the Islanders jumped out early with a 5-2 lead. During the run, Baresh added two of her set-high six kills. The Owls rallied back to score eight straight points to push ahead 10-5. The Islanders pulled within three after a Sanchez kill and an attacking error by the Owls. Both teams went back-and-forth until the Islanders cut the deficit to three on an Owls' service error and back-to-back kills by Baresh. After a Rice timeout, the teams traded points until a 6-0 run by the Owls made it 24-16. Baresh followed with a kill before Rice sealed the second set 25-17. Baresh led the Islanders in the second set with six kills and King tallied five digs.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi jumped out to an early 5-4 lead in the third set before Rice pushed ahead with five straight points. Haley Satterwhite Day collected a kill and after an Islanders' attacking error, Parker tallied two of her own kills to bring the Islanders within two. Both teams went back-and-fourth before back-to-back kills by Brink and Satterwhite and an attacking error by Rice put the Islanders back in front 14-12. After an Owls' timeout, Bourque recorded an ace to extend the Islanders' lead to three. However, Rice rallied back to score six straight points to retake the lead 18-15 and force the Islanders to take a timeout. The Islanders fought back-and-forth with the Owls until a 4-0 run by Rice gave them match point. Baresh followed with her 10th kill of the match before a kill by the Owls finished the set, 25-19.
