Volleyball Heads to Houston for Rice Invitational I

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will head back on the road this weekend to compete in the Rice Invitational I at Rice University. The Islanders will face Rice on Friday, Sept. 6, at 6:30 p.m. before facing LSU and UALR on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Tudor Fieldhouse.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi comes into Friday's match with a 1-2 record after suffering two tough losses to UC Irvine and Denver last weekend in the Pioneer Classic. In the final match of the classic the Islanders bounced back to take a 3-1 victory over Air Force.

Senior Logen Bourque led the way for the Islanders with 109 assists and was named all-tournament. She recorded her first double-double of the season with 31 assists and 10 digs against Denver and followed it with a season-high 43 assists in the Islanders' victory over Air Force.

Sophomore Ivy Baresh also had a solid weekend with 32 kills and a team-high 39 digs. She opened the season with a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs vs. UC Irvine and followed it with seven kills and five digs against Denver. In the final game of the classic, the outside hitter registered her second double-double of the season with 12 kills and a career-high 22 digs in the Islanders' victory over Air Force.

Rice holds a 0-3 record after falling to Fresno State, Cal State Northridge and Santa Clara in the Bulldog Invitational in Fresno, Calif. last weekend. Megan Murphy leads the Owls' offense after hitting .462 with 21 kills and collecting 122 assists over the weekend. Friday's match will mark the second time in school history the Islanders and Owls will meet up and second time in Houston. The two teams met up in 2007 at Rice with the Owls capturing a 3-0 victory.

LSU (3-0) opens the invitational on Friday against UALR before facing the Islanders at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The Tigers topped UTSA, UC David and San Diego State last weekend at home in the Tiger Classic. Cati Leak hit .341 and tallied 64 kills and 40 digs. Malorie Pardo runs the Tiger's offense with 12 assists per set. Saturday's match will mark the second meeting between the two schools with the Tigers holding a 0-1 advantage. LSU sealed a 3-0 victory in 2007.   

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will wrap the invitational against UALR on Saturday at 5 p.m. UALR enters competition with a 1-2 record after dropping matches to Southeast Missouri State and Mississippi State in the Maroon Classic in Starkville, Miss. The Trojans concluded the classic with a 3-1 victory over Mississippi State. Edina Begic hit .250 for the weekend and led the team with 55 kills and 42 digs. Marleen de Zoete collected 142 assists and is averaging 11.83 assists per set. Saturday's match will mark the third time the Islanders and Trojans have faced each other. The series is tied at 1-1. Islanders took a 3-2 victory in 2010 at the Mississippi State Maroon Classic while UALR took the first match, 3-0, in 2008 at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islander Invitational.

The Islanders will return to the Coastal Bend to host its first home match of the season on Monday, Sept. 9, at the Dugan Wellness Center. The Islanders will host UTSA at 7 p.m.
