CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team picked up its 16th win of the season on Tuesday night, taking a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-16) sweep over the Texas – Pan American Lady Broncs in the final non-conference home match of the season. The 16 wins are one shy of tying the all-time school record of 17 set during the 2005 season.
The Islanders (16-6) also picked up the season sweep of UTPA (9-13) with a dominating performance that featured 14 service aces by the team, including a career-high seven from Brooke Alverson to go along with six kills.
The only player from either team in double digits for kills was Brianna Brink with 10 during the match on a .333 hitting percentage. Shannon Hullum was close behind with nine on the night and Ivy Baresh had seven against the Lady Broncs. Logen Bourque came up with 30 assists and four kills while Baresh led the team with eight digs. Bourque, Micah Nolan and Shayla Maldonado each finished the match with six digs as the second-highest total from an Islander.
The opening set started fast and ended early for the Islanders as they picked up a 25-12 victory over UTPA for a 1-0 lead. Kills by Courtney Hall and Hullum gave their team a 3-0 lead and back-to-back Hullum kills followed by a service ace from the senior made it a 6-2 lead. The lead grew to nine at 13-4 on back-to-back service aces by Alverson to force the first Lady Broncs timeout. A kill by Brink following the break made it a 10-point advantage.
UTPA finally broke the streak on a kill that made it 15-5, but the Islanders would lead by as many as 13 at 19-6 on a Hullum kill and 20-7 on a kill by Baresh as they went on to take a 25-12 final for the early lead.
The second set was more evenly matched, although Texas A&M – Corpus Christi managed to keep a safe distance late in the session for a 25-17 win. The teams were tied at 2-2 before a Hullum kill and Brink service ace made it a 5-2 advantage. The biggest lead to that point in the set came following back-to-back aces from Alverson that made it 16-9 margin.
The score stood at 18-13 when the Islanders rattled off three consecutive points on kills by Alverson and Baresh made it a 21-13 lead that was the eventual biggest of the match. The two teams split the final six points of the match 3-3 as Texas A&M – Corpus Christi earned the 25-17 win and a 2-0 lead.
The final set saw the first four points come from the UTPA side, but the Islanders quickly recovered with kills by Baresh and Brink to even the score at 4-4. The first lead for the home team came on a Nolan service ace to make it 6-5 and the team never looked back. The biggest advantage came at 22-12 on a kill by Tyger Holt that made it a 10-point deficit for UTPA. A combined block by Holt and Hullum made it match point at 24-14, and a Lady Broncs service error finished the scoring at 25-16 for the 3-0 sweep.
Next up for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will be on Thursday, Oct. 18 in Huntsville, Texas against the Sam Houston State Bearkats. The two teams will battle it out for second place as they are in a tie for the spot with identical 8-2 records in Southland Conference play.
