Islanders Snap Southland Skid With Sweep of Colonels

THIBODAUX, La. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team snapped a two-match skid in Southland Conference play on Thursday night with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-21) sweep of the Nicholls Colonels in Stopher Gym. The Islanders will face Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

The Islanders (10-6, 3-2 Southland) rebounded from a pair of losses with a convincing win over Nicholls (5-9, 2-3 Southland) in the first part of the two-match road swing through Louisiana.

Setter Logen Bourque did double duty, picking up a double-double with 33 assists and 12 digs, both of which were match highs. Shannon Hullum led the way on offense with a match-high 11 kills for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, while Haley Satterwhite had a breakout match on the way to a career-high nine kills.

In the first set the Islanders were behind early on, falling behind 2-0 and trailing all the way until back-to-back kills by Ashley Phelps evened the score at 17-17, and a Colonel attack error made it an 18-17 lead for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. The teams battled to a 23-23 tie late in the set, but a kill by Hullum and a Bourque service ace ended it with a 25-23 score to give their team a 1-0 lead.

Set two started out to a draw at 5-5, but five consecutive points on a kill by Satterwhite and a pair from Tyger Holt made it a 10-5 advantage that the Islanders would not relinquish. When the Colonels closed the gap to three at 13-10, Phelps and Hullum were part of three-straight points that made it a 16-10 lead. With Texas A&M – Corpus Christi leading 21-16 late in the period, the final four points were scored on a kill by Satterwhite and two from Hullum to help the Islanders to a 25-16 final and a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.

The final set was similar to the first, with the teams knotting the score at 2-2 before a Colonels service error, followed by a Hullum kill and service ace, made it a 5-2 lead. With the lead at 16-14, the Islanders reeled off five points in a row with a kill from Hall, a service ace by Ivy Baresh and some Colonels miscues to make it a 21-14 lead. Nicholls battled back into it, closing the gap to 22-19, before a Satterwhite kill and a combined block by Satterwhite and Holt brought the score to match point at 24-20. After another Colonels point, they committed a service error to make it a 25-21 final and a 3-0 sweep for the Islanders.

Next up for the team will be a 2 p.m. match on Saturday just a short drive down the road in Hammond, La. to take on the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions. SELA was swept by Sam Houston State at home on Thursday night to move to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in Southland matches.
