DENTON – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team lost a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-23) final to Eastern Michigan on Saturday to finish 1-1 on the first day of the Mean Green Volleyball Classic. The team won a 3-0 final over Hofstra to start the day and will conclude play in the tourney on Saturday at 11 a.m. when they take on host North Texas.
The Islanders are now 6-4 on the year after the loss, while EMU improved to 7-2 in 2012. Ivy Baresh led the team in kills with nine and Courtney Hall finished with a season high of six kills on a .857 hitting percentage in the match. Renee Ramirez added 11 digs to lead the team and Logen Bourque finished with 16 assists.
It was rough going early on for the Islanders as they fell behind 6-2 while having trouble controlling the ball early on. They trailed by 11 points at 16-5 before scoring three straight on two EMU errors and a service ace by Micah Nolan to make it an eight-point deficit at 16-8. It would be the closest they could get however, as the Eagles took a 25-13 set for a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Islanders earned their first lead of the match at 2-1 in the second set when Tyger Holt put away an over pass, and used kills from Brianna Brink and Bourque to make it a 5-3 score. With Texas A&M – Corpus Christi leading 6-4, EMU scored four straight points to regain the lead at 8-6. The Islanders cut to score to one at 10-9, but a 9-2 run by the Eagles opened up an insurmountable 19-11 lead. Kills from Baresh and Shannon Hullum, followed by a Courtney Hall block solo and a Bourque service ace closed the gap to four at 21-17, but EMU finished the set with a 25-18 final to take a 2-0 lead.
The third and final period was a battle until the end, with neither team leading by more than two points at any time during the set. It featured 14 tie scores and six lead changes in a dramatic departure from the first two games. The Islanders trailed 3-2 after the first five points, but a pair of Ashley Phelps kills along with one from Hall gave their team a 5-3 lead, just their second of the match. With the lead at 17-15 for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, EMU scored four straight to take a 19-17 advantage. The Islanders tied the score at 20-20 on an Eagles attack error, and then added two more points on a Baresh service ace and a block solo from Holt to make it a 22-20 lead as EMU called a timeout.
After the break, the Eagles score four consecutive points to bring up match point. A kill from Bourque momentarily broke the momentum, but EMU finished it off with a kill to make it 25-23 and take a 3-0 match.
