Islanders Set for Final Pre-Conference Tournament at Mean Green Volleyball Classic
The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team will complete pre-conference play this weekend at the Mean Green Volleyball Classic where they will take on Hofstra, Eastern Michigan and North Texas in Denton. The team will play two matches on Friday, and finish the tourney against host North Texas on Saturday.
The Islanders are 5-3 on the year, while Hofstra holds the best record of all teams in the tournament at 8-1. The host team, North Texas, is 6-2 on the season, while Eastern Michigan is 5-2. New Southland member Oral Roberts will also play in the tournament and are 4-4, but will not face off against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi as the two are set to play a conference match the very next week.
Leading the way on offense are senior Shannon Hullum and sophomore Brianna Brink with 86 kills apiece this year. Junior Brooke Alverson has totaled 69 kills, while Ivy Baresh has 67 in her freshman season. Tyger Holt, another Islanders freshman, holds a .348 hitting percentage on 69 attacks from her middle blocker position.
Junior libero Micah Nolan has continued to stretch her school record for career digs with 139 this season, while fellow junior Logen Bourque has done likewise in the assists category, adding 289 through the first two weeks of the schedule.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will look to continue its momentum from the last match, a 3-0 sweep over UT Arlington on Labor Day. It was just the second time in school history the Islanders had defeated the Mavs, and the first under head coach Tony Graystone. The three opponents in the Mean Green Volleyball Classic have just five combined losses between them, but it is a challenge the improved Islanders team welcomes to help prepare them for the quickly approaching conference season.
After the weekend, Southland Conference action starts with the Islanders hosting preseason favorite Central Arkansas, followed by Oral Roberts, the team picked to finish second in the league.
