Baylor Blocks Islanders From Win in Season Opener

WACO – The battle was won at the net on Friday, as the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball team was unable to control the net, falling 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-19) in the opening match of the season against the Baylor Bears. The Islanders were unable to get any blocks on the night while Baylor posted 16 total blocks, one on a block solo and 30 block assists.

The team moves to 0-1 on the season after falling to a team that is three years removed from a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Baylor is now 1-0 on the year with the win.

Shannon Hullum led all players with 12 kills on the night, while newcomer Tyger Holt picked up five in her collegiate debut. Hullum hit .259 in the match to lead the team, while Holt came in second at .250 in her first match. Micah Nolan had a team-high nine digs, while Logen Bourque picked up 17 assists.

In the opening set, the Islanders played close early, but were unable to get through the block of Baylor on a regular basis, falling 25-11 to go down 1-0. The Bears had four blocks, six block assists and one block solo, as Texas A&M – Corpus Christi hit for a negative percentage in the first game. Leading the way was Bourque, going two-for-three on attacks as the Islanders offense struggled to find a rhythm.

In the second set, the Islanders trailed by as many as nine points at 20-11 before rallying to cut the lead to 23-20. A service error by Baylor and a kill by Shannon Hullum started things off, and after a point for the Bears, Tyger Holt tallied a kill, Nolan picked up a service ace and Ivy Baresh put away a kill that cut the lead to 21-17.

The teams traded points to 23-19, and a service error made it 23-20, but Baylor earned the final two points of the set on back-to-back kills to take the 2-0 lead in sets. Hullum was a big part of the rally, picking up four kills to lead the Islanders while Baresh and Brianna Brink had two each in the set. The Bears once again did a good job at the net, picking up 12 block assists for a total of six blocks in the second.

In the final set, the biggest lead was 17-10 in favor of Baylor, but just like the set before, the Islanders rallied to cut the deficit. They got within four points at 20-16, but they were unable to complete the comeback, falling by a 25-19 final to finish the match.

It will be a quick turnaround for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, as they are set to play Tulane at 10 a.m. in the Ferrell Center. After the early morning match, they will be back in action at 4:30 against the Nevada Wolfpack, who claimed the other win during the first day of the Fairfield Inn North Baylor Classic, taking a 3-2 final over Tulane in the opening match.
