Top Moment #8: Women's Tennis Victory Over SMU

The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's tennis team faced a tough challenge going into a matchup on Feb. 12 against Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the first of a five-match road swing.

Following a strong victory against Texas-Pan American at home earlier in the week, the Islanders were on a two-match winning streak and looking to further their success against the Mustangs who, at the time, were ranked No. 64 in the ITA rankings.

The Islanders (4-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after grabbing a tight doubles point over the Mustangs on the strength of a win by Maider Martin/Celia Rodriguez and a dramatic tiebreak victory by Sandra Burges/Judit Vives. But SMU quickly answered with three singles victories in a row on the first three courts to move ahead 3-1.

Undaunted, A&M-Corpus Christi continued to fight. Kerry Galhos bested Anna Kate Anderson in the No. 5 slot in straight sets to stay undefeated in singles play. The freshman squeezed out a 7-6 (2) first-set victory before winning the second set, 6-4. Vives went neck-and-neck with SMU's Holly Verner in the No. 6 position. After the freshman secured a 7-6 (6) tiebreaker in the first set, Verner answered with a 6-2 second-set victory. In the third, Vives earned a 6-2 win to stay undefeated and even the match at 3-3.

With the match on the line and her teammates cheering her on, Rodriguez edged Macie Elliott in a three-set battle in the No. 4 position. After falling 7-6 (2) in a close tiebreaker in the first, the sophomore answered with a 6-3 victory in the second set. In the third, Elliott pushed ahead 5-4, but Rodriguez rallied back to win the next three games, taking the set 7-5 and clinching the match for the Islanders.

This matchup was the first true test for the Islanders women's tennis team in what would come to be an historic season, as the squad went on to clinch the regular-season title at the Southland Tournament and earned their first NCAA berth.
