CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team has added Noelia Gómez (Barcelona, Spain) to a National Letter of Intent, Director of Tennis Steve Moore announced today. She joins Clara Carotta (Saint-Privat, France) and Jelena Dzinic (Subotica, Serbia) as part of the 2014 signing class.
"Noelia was very highly recommended to us by several coaches as well as current Islanders' player Judit Vives," Moore said. "We are always looking not only for a high-level player that can play on a nationally-ranked Division I team, but equally important we are looking for a player that is the right fit for the Islanders. We were really impressed with her ranking and results. We feel that Noelia has the high-character work ethic and commitment to the team concept that the Islanders stand for, and we are extremely excited to welcome her to the Islanders Tennis family."
Gómez, who advanced to the finals of the open women's Monty Tennis Tour the past two years, has recent wins over players ranked in the top 225 in the Spanish women's rankings, including a thrilling three-set victory over No. 90 ranked Valeria Koussenkova Borysyuk. The Spanish rankings are a composite that includes the professionals, adults and juniors.
The Islanders are looking to follow up their most successful year in Islanders history. The team had a historic season as they clinched their first Southland regular-season title and tournament championship along with their first NCAA Tournament berth. The Islanders also tallied a program-best 22 wins and won 16 of their last 18 matches, including impressive road wins at SMU, New Mexico State and Louisiana-Lafayette. The team also received tremendous support from the Islanders community, as they were ranked as high as fourth in the ITA national rankings for attendance.
