CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team has signed top-ranked Jelena Dzinic (Subotica, Serbia) to a National Letter of Intent, Director of Tennis Steve Moore announced today.
"We are extremely excited of Jelena's decision to come and join the Islanders tennis family," Moore said. "A player of Jelena's high-caliber will help our team immediately. I had her evaluated as one of the top 20 players in Europe and her ranking backs that up.
"We have signed some great players over the years from Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and I feel the tennis there is some of the highest in the world. As much as I am impressed with Jelena's high-level of tennis, I am equally impressed with her strong character as a person. Every coach I talked to that knew her spoke extremely highly of her as a person and a great fit for the Islanders."
Dzinic has been ranked as high as No. 1 in the junior rankings in Serbia and in the top 20 in Europe in the junior rankings. She is fluent in Serbian, English and Spanish and she was a member of the Serbian National Under-16 Team. In 2011 Dzinic finished eighth in the Euro Cup Tournament in singles play.
She joins Clara Carotta (Saint-Privat, France) as the second player to join the 2014 signing class. Carotta, who is another blue-chip recruit, comes to the Island University with an extremely impressive junior ranking in France.
The women's team is looking to follow up their most successful year in Islanders history. The team had a historic season as they clinched their first Southland regular-season title and tournament championship along with their first NCAA Tournament berth. The Islanders also tallied a program-best 22 wins and won 16 of their last 18 matches, including impressive road wins at SMU, New Mexico State and Louisiana-Lafayette. The team received tremendous support from the Corpus Christi community, as they were ranked as high as fourth in the ITA national rankings for attendance.
