CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs had a historic day on Monday with both teams clinching the Southland Conference regular-season title, and followed it today with Ricardo Mayagoitia and Sandra Burges being named the Southland Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week.
"I'm really proud of Sandra and Ricky," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "They represent everything that the Islanders stand for and they really make us proud. They are not the flashiest players, but they are the mentally toughest and the physically fittest and that has tremendous value in this hot part of the season. They are the hardest workers and the highest character kids a coach could ever ask for. We are very proud of both of them."
Burges, the all-time singles leader in Islanders history, led the women's team to three Southland Conference victories en route to their first Southland Conference regular-season title. Burges clinched the match and the title for the Islanders with a 6-0, 6-1, straight-set victory over New Orleans' Yasmine Rashad in No. 4 singles on Monday. Prior to that, she secured two straight-set victories in No. 5 singles over Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word. The senior has powered the Islanders this season with an 18-5 overall record and an 11-1 record in the Southland. She holds an all-time career record of 59-21 and a 32-11 Southland record.
Mayagoitia powered his way to a straight-set victory in No. 2 singles on Monday to clinch the 6-1 match for the Islanders men's team over New Orleans. The victory clinched the seventh straight Southland Conference regular-season title for the Islanders. Prior to that, Mayagoitia secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory in No. 2 singles against Abilene Christian to help the Islanders secure sole possession of first place in the Southland standings. The sophomore has compiled a 13-7 overall mark at No. 2 singles and a 5-1 record in the conference this season.
The Islanders will host the men's and women's Southland Conference Tournament this weekend at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The men's team received the No. 1 seed and will face No. 4 New Orleans on Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. The women's team earned the No. 2 seed and will take on No. 7 Central Arkansas on Friday, April 25, at 2 p.m. For more information on the tournament click HERE.
