EDINBURG, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team powered their way a 4-0 win over Texas-Pan American today, to earn their ninth consecutive singles victory of the season. The Islanders (15-4) secured the doubles point before Stefania Nicolae, Sandra Burges and Celia Rodriguez clinched their singles matches in straight sets to garner the win at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
"This match was a tough battle on the road," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "Texas-Pan American has a very tough team and they are tough at home. The thing I respect so much about our girls is I know I can count on them to show up and fight hard, and be mentally tough, day in and day out, win or lose. That's what we did today. This match was a lot tougher than the score and I'm proud of our girls."
A&M - Corpus Christi opened with an early 1-0 lead over the Broncs (13-7) after earning the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. The tandem of Maider Martin and Rodriguez started things off with an 8-3 victory in No. 2 doubles over Reegan Greenwood and Katia Stavroulaki to win their sixth straight doubles match of the season and improve to a team-best 11-4 record. The freshman-senior duo of Judit Vives and Burges followed with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Christel Amsallem and Wanda Beguelin to clinch the doubles point for the Islanders and pad their record to 9-4. On the final court of doubles, Nicolae and Venesa Figueroa were trailing Didi Fatchikova and Mariana Ranzahuer in the No. 3 slot, 7-5, when play was stopped. It marked the first time the two had been paired together this season.
The Islanders took their momentum into singles play to earn three straight-set victories. Burges started the surge with her fourth straight victory at No. 5 singles. The senior downed Ranzahuer, 6-0, 6-2, to improve to 14-4 on the year and 9-1 in the No. 5 slot. Nicolae followed suit with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Fatchikova to register her fourth consecutive win at No. 1 singles. Rodriguez then clinched the match for the Islanders in the No. 4 spot. The sophomore picked up her eighth straight victory after cruising to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Greenwood. Rodriguez has a team-high 15 wins in singles play and has tallied a perfect 12-0 mark in No. 4 singles.
In the final three singles matches, Martin was headed into a three-setter in No. 3 singles with Stavroulaki when the match was clinched. Martin, who is on a two-match winning streak, captured the first set 6-2 before falling in a tight 7-5 second set. In No. 2 singles, Vives, who was named the Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week and the GoIslanders.com Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, fell 6-3 in the first set to Beguelin. In the second set the two were even at 4-4. Figueroa made her Islanders debut today in No. 6 singles. After sitting out last season with an injury, the redshirt freshman was battling Amsallem in the second set 4-1 after dropping a close 7-5 first set.
The Islanders will return home for a two-match homestand at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. First up is a makeup match with No. 27 Houston on Saturday, April 12, at 12 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Feb. 2 in Houston, but was postponed due to rain in the forecast.
