Islanders Grind Past McNeese State, 5-2, on the Road

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team grinded past McNeese State, who was undefeated in Southland Conference play, 5-2, to win their fourth straight Southland match. Freshman Judit Vives clinched her 10th victory of the season after securing the match for the Islanders (10-4, 4-1 SLC) over the Cowgirls (10-5, 5-1 SLC) in No. 3 singles.

"This was a great team effort today from the girls," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "They really fought with tremendous spirit and I felt like they played extremely tough tennis. We were fortunate because we got a windy day.

"McNeese is having an amazing season and I have the highest respect for Danielle Steinberg and the team they have assembled.  This was a very spirited courageous effort from our girls to beat a very good team on the road."

The Islanders garnered the doubles point after picking up wins on courts two and three. The Cowgirls garnered the first doubles match in the No. 1 slot after Klaudia Gawlik and Sara Castellano topped the freshman-senior duo of Sandra Burges and Vives, 8-1. The Islanders answered back with a win on court three after the duo of Celia Rodriguez and Maider Martin cruised to an 8-2 victory over Julia Kral and Annabella Peacock to win their third straight match. The tandem of Stefania Nicolae and Kerry Galhos then teamed up to edge Anastasia Surkova and Vivien Borbely, 8-5, in No. 2 doubles to clinch the point for the Islanders.

"I thought the girls had tremendous energy in the doubles," Moore said. "I thought Stefania Nicolae was outstanding in doubles as were Celia Rodriguez and Maider Martin. I feel like Celia and Sandra Burges really came out and made a statement with their footwork and tough play."

The Cowgirls answered with back-to-back singles wins on courts one and two to take a 2-1 lead. Martin fell 6-3, 6-2 to Castellano in No. 2 singles before Nicolae dropped a 6-1, 6-3 match to Gawlik in No. 1 singles. The Islanders however would not allow McNeese State any more points as they powered their way through the final four singles matches to win 5-2.

Burges started the rally, downing Surkova, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 5 slot to win her fourth straight singles match and improve to 10-3 and 5-0 in conference play. Rodriguez followed suit with a sweeping 6-0 victory over Borbely in the first set and a 7-5 second-set win in the No. 4 spot to win her fourth consecutive singles match. The sophomore improved her singles record to 11-3 and 8-0 in No. 4 singles.

The Islanders clinched the point in No. 3 singles after Vives earned a straight-set win over Kral. The freshman edged Kral 7-6 (5) in the first set before garnering a 6-3 second-set win. The Barcelona, Spain native has won four straight singles matches and now holds a 10-1 record in singles play.

"For Judit Vives as a freshman to clinch the match in front of her parents who flew all the way from Spain to surprise her, that's as good as it gets," Moore said. "That's what this journey is all about, moments like that."

Galhos earned the Islanders their fifth point of the day with a three-set win over Peacock in No. 6 singles. The freshman sealed the first set 6-2, before dropping the second set 6-2. In the third, Galhos fought her way to a 6-2 win to earn her ninth singles win and fifth consecutive victory.

"I thought Kerry Galhos' mental toughness and the adjustments she made in the third set were outstanding especially for a freshman," Moore added.

The Islanders will head to Thibodaux, La. to face Nicholls (10-4, 4-1 SLC) tomorrow at 11 a.m.
