CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team continues conference play this weekend with two road matches. The Islanders will meet McNeese State on Saturday, March 29, in Lake Charles, La. before taking on Nicholls on Sunday, March 30, in Thibodaux, La.
The Islanders (9-4, 3-1 SLC) have won three of their last four matches, including three straight conference matches. A&M - Corpus Christi is coming off a 6-1 dominating performance over Central Arkansas in Dallas on Tuesday. The Islanders garnered the doubles point with wins on courts one and three before securing five out of the six singles matches.
This season, the two freshmen, Judit Vives and Kerry Galhos, have been exceptional in singles play. Vives is on a three-match winning streak and holds a 9-1 record, including a perfect 6-0 mark in the No. 6 slot. Her only loss of the season came in No. 4 singles at Northwestern State. The Barcelona, Spain native has also teamed up with senior Sandra Burges in doubles play to tally a 7-2 mark. Galhos is on a four-match winning streak at No. 6 singles and comes into Saturday's match with an 8-2 singles record and a 4-0 mark in conference play.
Burges has been a strong vocal leader for the Islanders. The senior is perfect in conference play with a 4-0 record after earning four consecutive wins at No. 5 singles. The Zaragoza, Spain native holds an overall mark of 9-3 and has teamed up with Vives in all 13 doubles matches this season. The duo started out the season on a five-match winning streak before dropping a pair of matches against Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana.
Celia Rodriguez, a consistent leader for the Islanders, started the season with a perfect 5-0 singles record in the No. 4 spot. After moving up to No. 3 singles, she has tallied a 3-3 mark for an overall record of 10-3. Against Central Arkansas the sophomore earned her team-high 10th victory of the season in singles play, including her seventh win in the No. 4 position. The native of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, has teamed up with sophomore Maider Martin in doubles play this season. The tandem has won their last two matches to improve to 3-1 in conference play and 7-4 overall.
McNeese State enters Saturday's match with a 10-4 record, including a 5-0 record in Southland play. The Cowgirls are on a seven-match winning streak after securing wins against Oral Roberts, Central Arkansas, Lamar, Sam Houston State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Nicholls and UL-Monroe.
The Cowgirls have five players who hold a 5-0 record in singles play, led by Klaudia Gawlik in the No. 1 slot with an 11-2 overall record. Sara Castellano holds an 11-2 record in No. 2 singles while Julia Kral sits at 12-1 in the No. 3 spot.
Last season, the Islanders fell to the Cowgirls at home, 5-2, during the regular season before sweeping them, 4-0, in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament.
Nicholls comes into the weekend on a four-match winning streak and a 9-4 record, including a 3-1 mark in conference play. Prior to the Islanders match on Sunday, the Colonels will take on Incarnate Word in conference play on Saturday. Nicholls has won four straight with wins over Central Arkansas, Lamar, Texas-Pan American and Oral Roberts. The Colonels only loss in conference play came against McNeese State, 5-2.
Isla Brock is on a four-match winning streak and has powered the Colonels in singles play this season with a 9-1 mark, including a 7-0 record in No. 5 singles. In doubles action, Stephanie Barnett and Kiara Skopac have teamed up for a 7-3 record, including a 6-1 mark in No. 2 doubles.
The Islanders topped the Colonels last season, 5-2 in Beaumont, Texas, in a neutral-site match. A&M - Corpus Christi earned the doubles point before recording wins in four singles matches. Returners Stefania Nicolae, Burges and Rodriguez all secured singles wins.
Following Sunday's match, the Islanders will host Prairie View A&M on Thursday, April 3, in a non-conference match at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
