Islanders Win Third Straight with 6-1 Victory over UCA
DALLAS – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team breezed past Central Arkansas today, 6-1, in Dallas, to secure their third conference victory of the season. The Islanders picked up the doubles point before winning five straight-set singles matches to improve to 9-4 on the year.
"We got off to a surprisingly slow start in doubles," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "I didn't think our energy and footwork were where it needed to be at in the beginning, but I give these girls a lot of credit because they acknowledged that and chose to correct that with their actions. The footwork and energy in the singles was excellent and I felt this team played very determined today in singles."
The Islanders (9-4, 3-1 SLC) garnered a tight doubles point with wins on courts one and three to take an early 1-0 lead. In No. 1 doubles, the senior-freshman duo of Sandra Burges and Judit Vives topped UCA's (7-9, 0-6 SLC) Kristina Horsikyan and Kelsey Williams, 8-3, to improve their doubles mark to 7-2. The Bears answered back at No. 2 doubles after Cassidy Crawford and Simona Horsikyan edged the Islanders pair of Stefania Nicolae and Kerry Galhos, 8-6. A&M - Corpus Christi then clinched the point at No. 3 doubles after the tandem of Celia Rodriguez and Maider Martin earned their third conference doubles win of the season, with a 8-7 (0) tiebreaker victory over Krizia Buck and Sasha Ruocoo.
The Islanders kept the momentum going into singles play to extend their lead to 2-0. Rodriguez downed Crawford, 6-2, 6-1 to stay undefeated in No. 4 singles at 7-0. The sophomore earned her third straight win and 10th singles victory of the season.
UCA responded back with a win at No. 1 singles after Simona Horsikyan topped Nicolae, 6-4, 6-1. However, that would be the only point the Islanders would allow the rest of the day as they captured the remaining four singles matches. Martin won her match in straight sets in the No. 2 slot, 6-3, 6-3, over Williams to clinch the match for the Islanders. Vives padded the Islanders lead to 4-1, after winning her third consecutive match and her ninth of the season. The freshman sealed a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set victory in the No. 3 spot to improve to 9-1 on the year in singles play.
Burges then took care of business winning in straight sets to secure her fourth straight match at No. 5 singles. She now holds a perfect 4-0 record in Southland play after cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Buck. The Islanders recorded their final point of the day on court six after Galhos notched a 6-2, 6-1 win over Strukelj to win her fourth consecutive match in the No. 6 spot. Like Burges, she also holds a 4-0 mark in conference play and has tallied an 8-2 record this season in singles play.
"It's always special playing in Dallas because we have some very dear friends of our program that come out, and support us and that means the world to our team," Moore added.
The Islanders will continue their Southland Conference road swing at McNeese State and Nicholls. The Islanders will first face the Cowgirls on Saturday, March 29.
