CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team heads to Dallas on Tuesday, March 25, to face Central Arkansas in Southland Conference play.
The Islanders (8-4, 2-1 SLC) are coming off an impressive 6-1 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, the defending regular-season Southland Conference champions, on Thursday. Senior Stefania Nicolae clinched the match at No. 1 singles to help lead her team to their second consecutive Southland Conference victory. The Islanders secured the doubles point before Celia Rodriguez, Kerry Galhos, Nicolae, Sandra Burges and Judit Vives all registered wins in singles play.
This season, the two freshmen, Vives and Galhos, have been outstanding in singles play. Vives holds an 8-1 record, including a perfect 6-0 mark in the No. 6 slot. Her only loss of the season came in No. 4 singles at Northwestern State. The Barcelona, Spain native has also teamed up with Burges in doubles play to tally a 6-2 mark. Galhos is on a three-match winning streak at No. 6 singles and comes into Tuesday's match with a 7-2 record in singles play.
Along with Nicolae, Burges has been a strong leader for the Islanders. The senior is perfect in conference play with a 3-0 record after earning three consecutive wins at No. 5 singles. The Zaragoza, Spain native holds an overall mark of 8-3 and has teamed up with Vives in all 12 doubles matches this season. The duo started out the season on a five-match winning streak before dropping a pair of matches against Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana.
Rodriguez, a consistent leader for the Islanders, started the season with a perfect 5-0 singles record in the No. 4 spot. After moving up to No. 3 singles, she has tallied a 3-3 mark for an overall record of 9-3. Against Southeastern La. the sophomore earned her team-high ninth victory of the season in singles play, including her sixth win in the No. 4 position.
Central Arkansas enters Tuesday's match with a 7-8 record, including a 0-5 record in Southland play. The Bears are on a five-match losing streak after dropping losses against Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin, Southeastern La., McNeese State and Nicholls. This season, UCA has wins against Harding, Tennessee-Martin, Arkansas Fort Smith, Alcorn State, Grambling, Northwestern State and Southwest Baptist.
Krizia Buck leads the Bears with an overall 12-3 mark in singles play and a 4-1 mark in conference action with three of those wins coming at No. 5 singles.
Last season, the Islanders opened Southland Conference play in Dallas against the Bears. The Islanders cruised to a 6-1 win after picking up the doubles point and five singles wins. Returners, Maider Martin, Burges, Nicolae and Rodriguez registered singles wins.
Following Tuesday's match, the Islanders will continue their Southland Conference road swing at McNeese State and Nicholls. The Islanders will first face the Cowgirls on Saturday, March 29.
