Women’s Tennis to Host Southeastern Louisiana in SLC Play Thursday
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's tennis team will continue Southland Conference play Thursday, March 20, at 6 p.m. when they host Southeastern Louisiana in their third home match of the season at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders (7-4, 1-1 SLC) are coming off a thrilling 4-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin that lasted two days. The match was resumed from Saturday after heavy rain showers suspended the match. The Islanders were up 3-2 and Judit Vives was late in her third set at No. 4 singles when rain came down and halted the match. On Monday, the freshman came out strong and played with incredible courage to win 6-3 in the third to clinch the match for the Islanders and garner the team's first Southland win. Also picking up singles wins were Celia Rodriguez, Sandra Burges and Kerry Galhos.
Vives has been outstanding in her first year as an Islander with a 7-1 singles record, including a 6-0 mark in No. 6 singles. In doubles, Vives holds a 6-1 record in the No. 2 slot with Burges with their only loss of the season coming at Northwestern State. Prior to that the duo won five straight.
Freshman Kerry Galhos has also been superb in singles play. The native of Dili, Timor Leste, has compiled a 6-2 record after starting the season 4-0. She is 2-0 in Southland Conference singles play this season.
Rodriguez, a consistent leader for the Islanders, started the season with a perfect 5-0 singles record in the No. 4 slot. After moving up to No. 3 singles, she has tallied a 3-3 mark for an overall record of 8-3.
Co-captain Burges has been the warrior for the Islanders this season. In Houston, the native of Zaragoza, Spain, fought like a champion and clinched the match for the Islanders, 4-3, over New Mexico State. This season, the senior holds a 7-3 record, including a 2-0 mark in conference play.
Last season, the women's team advanced to the finals of the Southland Conference Tournament, while placing second in the conference during the regular season.
Southeastern Louisiana enters Thursday's match with a 4-1 Southland mark and a 9-2 overall record. The defending Southland Conference regular-season champions have wins over Alcorn State, Southern Mississippi, Louisiana-Lafayette, Southern and Rutgers, while picking up victories over Sam Houston State, Lamar, Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts in conference play. The Lions have won five of their last six matches including a 4-3 non-conference win over Rutgers on Tuesday. Along with the Islanders, Southeastern Louisiana has been one of five Southland Conference teams to be nationally ranked in the ITA top 75 over the last several years.
Last season, the Islanders and Lions met up in Hammond, La. on March 29. The Islanders grinded out a tough 5-2 match to knock the Lions out of first place in the conference standings and move up to second place. The Islanders garnered the doubles point and returners Maider Martin, Chelsea Horan and Rodriguez all sealed singles wins.
Following Thursday's match, the Islanders will head back on the road for a three-match conference road trip. First up for the Islanders will be Central Arkansas on Tuesday, March 25, in Dallas, Texas. The Islanders men's team will return to action on Friday, March 21, in Houston, when they take on Rice.
